RAP legend Snoop Dogg did not miss with his expletive-laden attack at Donald Sterling, the Los Angeles Clippers owner who copped a life ban from the NBA today over racist comments.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver also fined Sterling $2.5 million and called on other owners to force him to sell the team after he was caught on tape urging his then-girlfriend not to publicly associate with blacks.

More: Clippers owner banned for life

Everyone from President Barack Obama to Michael Jordan and LeBron James weighed in on Sterling's comments.

But Snoop got his message across clearest.

"A message to the mother*cker who owns the Clippers, you bitch-ass redneck, whitebread, chicken sh*t mother*cker," Snoop said in an Instagram post.

"F*ck you, your mama, and everything connected to you, you racist piece of sh*t. F*ck you."

Fellow rapper Lil Wayne also had his say.

"This is dedicated to motherf*cking Donald Sterling," he said.

"First of all, I'm gonna sum it up for everybody that I believe feel this way. I'm gonna sum it up for everybody on my side of the field, on my side of the gate – and I think you know what I mean when I say that.

"F*ck you. That simple. That easy. If I was a Clipper fan, I wouldn't be one anymore. It's that simple.

"If I was a Clipper player, a current Clipper player, you wouldn't see me on the court anymore in that uniform. An apology wouldn't do for me, it wouldn't work for me."

Massive fine for getting a lift

Will Uber ride-share drivers be slapped with a $110,000 fine in NSW? Source: AP

RIDE-SHARING apps have hit the mainstream. The buzz on the street is we'll all be raking in cash by helping out strangers. Or will we?

The concept of ride-sharing is hitting Australia with apps such as Uber allowing everyday people to drive passengers for a fee.

But is there a catch? It appears drivers may be in breach of the law and could be slapped with a whopping $110,000 fine - in NSW at least - for charging strangers for lifts.

NSW Transport have released a statement stating drivers can be fined for "taking paying members of the public as passengers".

"A person who carries on a public passenger service in breach of the Act may face

prosecution and fines of up to $110,000," it read.

The government noted this does not apply to groups of friends sharing expenses or carpooling.

Uber is being investigated by the Roads and Maritime Authority. Source: AP

A spokesman for Transport NSW admitted apps that are purely a platform for connecting drivers and passengers, such as Backseat, are "in a grey area" of the law.

"Whether or not their service is contravening the act is yet to determined," the spokesman told news.com.au.

David Rohrsheim from Uber doesn't seem fazed by the crackdown.

"We've had regular positive discussions with the NSW Government for some time. We know they are watching this ride-sharing trial very closely, and they will be very interested to hear the feedback from customers," he told news.com.au.

"Early feedback from drivers and passengers has been overwhelmingly supportive. I'm confident what we are building will be the safest, most reliable, most affordable transportation option for consumers."

Uber says they have been involved in positive talks with the NSW government. Source: ThinkStock

A Roads and Maritime Service spokeswoman said Uber is currently being investigated in NSW.

"Roads and Maritime Services has received allegations Uber has breached the Passenger Transport Act and is investigating."

"If there are found to be breaches, companies and individuals can be pursued as appropriate."

VicRoads have been contacted for comment on whether drivers in Victoria are subject to fines.

Ring of Fire: Eclipse as it happens

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 April 2014 | 14.41

The Ring of Fire eclipse gracing our skies. Here's how the country saw it. Source: Supplied

WE know the sun commands place at the centre of our Solar System but today it is also the centre of our attention as the Ring of Fire eclipse takes place over Australian skies.

One of only a handful of places on Earth to see the event, sky gazers across Australia are given a partial view of a celestial event that will transform the sun. Sadly, only a remote part of Antarctica will be able to get the full view of the spectacle where as we only see a partial covering. Still, it's pretty amazing, and we feel pretty exclusive to witness the show.

MORE: BEST PLACES TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE

As the moon slowly creeps into position to nibble away at the sun at 0600 (GMT) here's what the country saw as it unfolded:

Sky gazers get ready to safely catch a glimpse with some home made contraptions. NASA would be proud.

But, uh oh. Clouds are coming...

It was a washout in Melbourne, too.

Hobart, the place where astronomers claimed would be the best place in Australia to view the eclipse, had a wonderful view.

However, in Newcastle the sun was in full view. This is what a live webcast from Slooh broadcast:

The sun is full and (left) what an annular eclipse should look like. Source: Supplied

The eclipse juuuuust begins at the bottom right corner. Source: Supplied

Moon moves further across Source: Supplied

One industrious eclipse watcher from Adelaide does it safely

Progress 40 minutes in:

A little bit of cloud creeps in Western Australia, but still a stunning image.

As viewers in anywhere other than Antarctica we are only going to get a partial view and this is about as much as we'll see from this eclipse.

About as far as the moon will cover the sun here in Australia. Rather disappointing. Source: Supplied

In Perth clouds tried their best to spoil things but some still managed to get a good view.

The Perth Observatory also got a good look at the eclipse, but note the words 'heavy cloud'.

What you could see if you have high-tech telescopes. Source: Supplied

After a clear morning in Sydney, clouds rolled over just in time for the eclipse, but patient viewers were rewarded for all their neck craning with a quick cloud clearing exposing a quick flash.

So, that was it folks. It wasn't the big fiery ring we were hoping for but really, no one on the planet would have got that view. It still looked pretty cool as the moon took a chunk out of the sun but for most, all they got was a bunch of clouds and we feel for those who were let down.

Why is this eclipse so special?

Well, other than looking so unusual, unlike total solar eclipses where we're plunged into semidarkness for a brief period of time, this rare annular eclipse results in only the outline of the sun to be seen like a flaming ring. But it's unique as there has never been an annular eclipse so unaccessible. It has been jokingly nicknamed the 'Penguin Eclipse" as it will only be seen by those animals in Antarctica to get the full view of the Ring of Fire -- if at all. There's a chance it won't be seen at all due to the event happening after sunset in the South Pole.

How does this happen?

The annular eclipse happens due to the moon being the furthest point away from earth as it passed the sun's path. This means from our perspective on Earth it wasn't big enough to fully cover the sun, instead slotting into its footprint and only blotting out the inner section.

To some astronomers this barely qualifies as an eclipse.

"In the pantheon of eclipses the most spectacular is the total eclipse, but they only occur once every 360 years," said Bob Berman of Slooh.

Twin agrees: MKR got it wrong

Former My Kitchen Rules contestant Luke Hines says team WA is his pick.

  • MKR viewer backlash amid threats of show boycott

AS angry viewers of My Kitchen Rules threaten a boycott of the grand final tonight, recently ousted twin Helena Moursellas says Channel 7 are chasing ratings.

"The show has rated so well this year that it all makes sense why they (Chloe and Kelly) made it so far," Helena said.

"I didn't think they would get this far. When we first started we said 'they need to go, they need to get out'. We all thought Paul and Blair were going to be in the grand final."

READ MORE FROM HELENA

Helena's claims, made just hours before the highly-anticipated grand final, comes as social media is already abuzz with threats to boycott the hit show

The twittersphere erupted on Monday night when Chloe James and Kelly Ramsay beat popular Queensland dads Paul Bullpitt and Blair Tonkin by just one point.

Their win sparked talk of a potential set up by Channel 7 producers to pit the South Australian mums Bree May and Jessica Liebich, against their rivals, the well-travelled West Australian friends Chloe James and Kelly Ramsay.

But Channel 7 has since told News Corp that the episodes were all filmed last year so they couldn't manipulate the results to keep in popular contestants.

South Australian mums Bree and Jess are up against team WA Chloe and Kelly. Source: Supplied

Still, by 9.15am this morning a Boycott MKR Grand Final 2014 Facebook page had generated 470 likes with fans claiming they won't be watching the show.

The Facebook page write-off says: "By liking this page we are showing channel 7 we aren't watching your rigged MKR grand final and season 2015! WE WON'T STAND FOR BULLYING!"

One commenter Stephen Vasil went further by posting: "I saw this program tonight and could not believe the intimidation by Chloe and Kelly towards the twins. I have hurried home for the last few weeks to ensure I watched this program. But after what I saw tonight, I was shocked that it went to air. And I regret that I ever did watch MKR!"

During last night's show Chloe and Kelly made constant jibes against the twins, laughing loudly when they put ice cream mixture straight into the machine rather than the bucket. Then there were the constant remarks they made as the twins cooked, such as them "having one brain" between them.

Some angry MKR viewers claim they won't be watching, will you? Picture: Facebook Source: Facebook

In an interview with news.com.au just two days ago, Chloe insisted the rivalry with the twins was blown completely out of proportion.

HAS CHANNEL 7 BEEN TAKING US FOR A RIDE?

"What you haven't seen is the relationship develop and the rivalry develop," she said. "We do a lot of work with the twins, a lot of promotions and publicity. If it was horrible between us then we wouldn't be enjoying ourselves. We're all grown-ups."

While the backlash against the WA girls and MKR has been fierce, if last night's ratings of over 2 million are anything to by, we're sure Channel 7 are not too worried about comments such as these being posted on social media.

There were also those who didn't agree with Chloe and Kelly's behaviour.

Even the mums came under fire for various reasons.

There were also further claims of rigging.

Whichever way you look at it, there may be a few unhappy MKR fans if team WA do win.

Will you be watching, tell us below?

Ugly fight spoils Logies party

Written By Unknown on Senin, 28 April 2014 | 14.41

Scott Cam from 'The Block' has been awarded the Golden Logie for most popular television personality.

AN UGLY clash with Crown security staff has marred the after-party fun at Channel 10's Logie celebrations, with the network lodging a formal complaint over an incident with former Neighbours star Dan O'Connor.

FASHION: Best and worst looks from the Logies

KYLIE: Celeb's slam Minogue's Logies gig

NAILED IT: Scott Cam wins the Gold Logie

Incident ... former Neighbours star Dan O'Connor was refused entry to Channel Ten's Logies after party last night.

As the star-studded festivities wound down about 3.30am, O'Connor and a small group of friends were refused re-entry for the last dance, despite being warmly welcomed by Ten's publicity and security teams.

In an explosive encounter which threatened to repeat the physical altercation between casino staff and Dieter Brummer at Nine's party in 2011, a lead security guard outside Crown Promenade's Tonic bar is alleged to have angrily abused Ten staff and turned his enormous size on both guests and other security personnel.

The guard, along with two junior guards, terrified onlookers who came to a shocked O'Connor's defence - standing between the guards and the actor musician and his mates.

After frantic calls to Crown security executives, about six senior casino staff rushed to the scene to defuse tensions.

It was a disappointing black spot on an otherwise joyous celebration for Ten, toasting Asher Keddie's two silver Logies for its returning drama series, Offspring.

Crown declined to comment about the incident

Dan O'Connor has been approached for comment.

This is Kochie’s greatest hit

Port Adelaide has stunned Geelong with a 40 point win to go top of the AFL ladder.

Port Adelaide fans love him. Except for the guy at the back, it seems. PIC SARAH REED. Source: News Limited

THEY'RE the story of the AFL season so far. Port Adelaide. A team nobody outside Adelaide thinks about, let alone talks about.

This is a team with teal, black and white colours — and let's be honest, does any self-respecting man even know what teal is? A team with a gawky mascot called Tommy "Thunda" Power and a cringe-worthy song with the line: "we'll never stop, stop, stop till we're top, top, top".

Well, guess what. Port Adelaide now sits on "top, top, top" of the AFL ladder, after beating its nemesis Geelong by 40 points yesterday. Geelong, remember, trounced Port in a 2007 grand final so one-sided, your TV monitor probably tipped sideways on the wall.

Port still hadn't beaten the Cats since that day. But now they have, in the clearest sign yet that this club is going places.

Head and shoulders above the rest: Port's Robbie Gray marks in front of Geelong's Cameron Guthrie. Photo: Sarah Reed. Source: News Corp Australia

PROMISING SIGNS

The signs have been good for a while. No nonsense Port coach Ken Hinkley was last year voted coach of the year by his peers. Captain Travis Boak is increasingly well-regarded. The club even has a secret weapon in fitness guru Darren Burgess, who has turned them into fourth-quarter powerhouses. No team more regularly reverses three-quarter time deficits than Port Adelaide.

But underpinning all the success is Port Adelaide Chairman David Koch. Yes, Kochie. You might remember him from such successful breakfast TV shows as Channel Seven's Sunrise.

Since becoming chairman of the club he'd supported since childhood in late 2012, Koch has made an unpopular club popular again. Broadcaster and commentator Gerard Whateley was at the footy in Adelaide yesterday watching Koch work his magic.

"He's a very popular and recognisable figure, "Whateley says. "Wherever you go, fans call out to him. He's given people a great sense of belonging. They call out to get photos with him, and he's extremely accommodating.

"They're his people now and to see him with parents afterwards, he's clearly got a great link with the mums and dads of the players. He's making the club a family where everyone's welcome."

A PORT BOY

Koch grew up wearing a Port Adelaide guernsey around the beachside Adelaide suburb of Largs North. Back then, Port were the called Magpies and played in the South Australian competition, the SANFL. They still do. But in 1997, the club also joined the AFL, competing as the Power.

The early days were tough. In a portent of the 2012 season when the Sydney Swans won the flag while their new cross-town rivals GWS floundered, the Power missed the finals and watched the Adelaide Crows win the flag. The same occurred for good measure in 1998.

But by 2004, the Power had officially arrived, ending the Brisbane Lions dynasty in emphatic fashion. Port Adelaide were premiers, as Adelaide Crows fans cried tears of sauvignon blanc.

The 2007 season, on paper at least, was another good year. Plenty of teams would be thrilled with making a grand final. But the scale of Port's loss to Geelong was so great, and above all so embarrassing, the wounds took years to heal. By 2012, Port Adelaide's front door had become a turnstile for captains and coaches. Enter David Koch.

"Here was a club on the brink, with people questioning its relevance and whether it should remain there," Koch tells news.com.au.

"It was a club that had got itself a bit bogged down in the bunker, it was too inward looking and was really more concerned with its own postcode than understanding we play in a national competition on field and off the field.

"We had to build a club that was respected not only by our heartland and traditional members but also on a national basis, and build a brand, a club that even if you didn't barrack for Port, you'd say 'Geez, I love watching this club play'.

"Right from start we said we wanted to bring fun into footy. Life is so grumpy and serious these days. We wanted a team that played entertaining footy and when you come now, it's just a good family fun night out.

"The key was to have simple foundations. Good people, good culture, good processes, that's what we wanted."

Everyone wants a piece of Travis Boak and Dom Cassisi these days. Photo: Sarah Reed. Source: News Corp Australia

STRONG LEADERSHIP

For all his input, Koch is at pains not to take too much credit for the turnaround.

"I feel a bit guilty because a lot of people have worked over the years to get where we are now, from recruitment guys who put together a young team of real goers through to the previous board who did all the negotiations to get the club moved to Adelaide Oval. More importantly there's Ken Hinkley [the first Port Adelaide coach in 50 years with no previous connection to the club] and his coaching staff and Travis Boak, who will be one of our great captains."

Kochie says he now has the right board, chief executive, coach and captain. Yet he's not getting ahead of himself despite a bumper crowd of 47,000 turning up this weekend at the revamped Adelaide Oval. (For the record, Port is attracting bigger average crowds than the Crows in season 2014. That didn't even happen in the premiership year of 2004).

Kochie knows that it's just round six: "We're delighted with where we are, but then last year we won our first five matches, then lost the next five. You can never pick the future in footy."

But Whateley doesn't see the Power collapsing from here.

"They play genuine footy, hard unflinching footy. And they run. They've got a real dare but they have a built-in discipline too. Their game has solid foundations. They have the third youngest list but they have experience too. Their time might come quicker than people think. I think the competition this year will break into three groups and they'll definitely be in the breakaway at the top."

As much as Whateley admires the new Power on the field, he has even greater admiration for what's happened off the field.

"This was a club that had no spark to them at all. It was nearly a carcass on the football landscape three or four years ago. Koch brought a dynamism, a real palpable excitement. He made them stand for something."

Captain and coach share a joke about why all medals in the AFL are so ridiculously small. Photo: Sarah Reed. Source: News Corp Australia

THE PEOPLE'S CLUB

And what the club stands for, above all, is community. Just ask Kochie.

"Our roots go back to 1870. We're a community club, not a franchise. It's in our DNA. Our players get involved in so many community programs, we're really proud of those community links, it builds a soul, a heart into the club, and that's one of the keys to our success."

Under Koch, the Power's membership has skyrocketed from 28,000 to 41,000 last year, then a record 52,000 (and counting) this year. Despite that, the bottom line is still not assured.

"We're a challenger brand in a small market. We've got to be a bunch of goers, got to be best practise from football to off-field. It's been a terrific response by our members but overall, we've still got a lot to do."

In other words, the bottom line is still shaky. And Koch, remember, is a finance man through and through.

"In the business of sport, corporates are a lagging indicator. Merchandise sales and membership are leading indicators. The corporates wait for those till they move. So we've still got to tap into that and get the big corporate dollars. But it's coming."

A premiership might be coming too. But for now, the throngs at the Adelaide Oval are just happy to be on top, top, top. And with one of Australia's cleverest and most popular men helping run the show, who's to say when they'll stop, stop, stop?

English club sets benchmark for embarrassment

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 April 2014 | 14.41

Wirral's dubious honour — all out for three. Source: Supplied

ENGLAND'S cricketers may have suffered the embarrassment of a World Twenty20 defeat by the Netherlands and a 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia but even they were never bowled out for three as has happened to one club side.

Wirral, from north-west England, was dismissed for just three against Haslington in a Cheshire League Third Division match — with extras the topscorer courtesy of two leg-byes.

There were 10 ducks in the Wirral innings, with number 11 Connor Hodson, supposedly their worst batsman, the only member of the visitors' side to score a run off the bat.

That Wirral managed three was something of an achievement after they were reduced to eight down for no runs, in an innings that lasted fewer than 10 overs.

Haslington won the match by 105 runs after making only 108 themselves before, as the Stoke Sentinel newspaper reported, "the real drama unfolded after the tea interval".

Wirral's official Twitter feed saw them issue pleas to several ex-England players, including former captain Michael Vaughan and popular television pandit David Lloyd for "a few hours coaching" under the hashtag of #weneedit.

TICKETS for their final shows sold out in just 43 seconds, but Australians will still be able to watch the last show of Monty Python's reunion.

The British comedy veterans behind Monty Python — John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, and Terry Jones — are reuniting for a new show in their first major collaboration in 30 years.

Titled 'The Last Night of Monty Python', the final show they perform will now be streamed to 1,500 movie theatres around the world and 450 cinemas in the UK after popular demand.

The Monty Python troupe's final live shows will run from July 1 to July 20 at London's O2 Arena.

While details are unknown, the shows are tipped to include some of the group's famous sketches.

Eric Idle remained tight-lipped, but said there would be "a little comedy, a lot of pathos, some music and a tiny bit of ancient sex".

SHOWS IN DEMAND: Monty Python tickets sell in 43 seconds

In a statement, the Pythons wrote: "Join the crowd live from London's O2 in a final weepy, hilarious, uproarious, outrageous, farewell to the five remaining Pythons as they head for The Old Jokes Home."

Cleese added: "People really want to see the old hits, but we don't want to do them in a predictable way.

"The main danger we have is that the audience know the scripts better than we do."

The last show on July 20 is the one that will be broadcast to theatres in Australia, the US, Sweden, Poland and Russia.

More countries could also show the broadcast.

The troupe won a cult following with their zany TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus between 1969 and 1974.

They went on to make several hit films including Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975) and Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979).

The final Meaning Of Life film in 1983 was the last time the group appeared with their sixth member Graham Chapman, who died of cancer six years later.

The remaining Pythons have not appeared together since 1998 when they performed at the Aspen Comedy Festival in the United States.

Man mistook ‘cockpit for toilet’

A man has been detained after banging on the cockpit door of a Virgin Australia plane flying to Bali.

The pilot of a Virgin Australia plane flying from Brisbane to the Indonesian holiday island of Bali reports a hijacking attempt, after a passenger tries to enter the cockpit. Sarah Toms reports.

Allegedly tried to enter cockpit ... Australian Matt Lockley, 28, is escorted by Indonesian Air Force officers at Ngurah rai Airport in Bali.

THE man accused of sparking a mid-air drama and fears of a hijack on board a Virgin flight from Brisbane to Bali told police he "thought the cockpit was the toilet door".

Matt Christopher Lockley, 28, told police he was asleep for most of the flight but woke up after a meal arrived. He then thought he had lost his bag and wanted medication from it.

After talking to a passenger next to him, the crew asked him to sit at the rear of the plane.

He then needed to go to the toilet.

Bali police spokesman Hery Wiyanto said: "He thought the cockpit was the toilet - he thought he was banging on the door to the toilet."

In his depressed state, Lockley claimed to have been "having hallucinations that somebody followed him and wanted to steal his bag", Wiyanto said.

Police who questioned him into the night in Bali said he repeated: "I am not drunk, I am not drunk."

Before leaving Brisbane he had only: "two Voltaren, four Panadol and two cans of Coca-Cola," police said.

Police sources say that he also claimed he was banging on the cockpit door because he wanted medication from his luggage.

And cabin crew described him to police as being unstable and appearing paranoid.

He was restrained at the rear of the aircraft and didn't put up a fight when officers arrested him on arrival at Denpasar airport.

Lockley was today taken to a Bali hospital where police learned he was being treated for a medical condition.

He was travelling to Bali in search of his Indonesian wife, whom he hasn't seen in two weeks, Wiyanto added.

"We will question him again after his health has returned," he said, describing Lockley's state as "exhausted".

He had been visited by friends and consular staff, and police were not treating him as a hijacking suspect.

Police sources in Bali have told News Corp Australia that Lockley also answered in Bahasa Indonesian displaying a knowledge of the local language.

He also told police he never intended to harm anyone during the drama which occurred about 30 minutes out of Denpasar.

"I didn't harm anyone," he told police during questioning.

Lockley was last night taken to Bali police headquarters in Denpasar for questioning where he was held overnight.

Police took blood and urine samples to test for alcohol or drugs and seized medication from him.

He was also examined by psychiatrists after his arrest.

Police have yet to indicate what charges Lockley will face, if any, after his dramatic arrest at gunpoint yesterday.

The incident sparked a major drama, causing Denpasar airport to close and go on high alert when it was initially reported he was a hijacker.

Indonesian authorities are investigating how the false hijacking signal was sent.

Dressed in flip-flops, white shorts and a T-shirt, Lockley was arrested by military police and taken in for questioning after the Virgin Australia flight landed safely at Ngurah Rai airport.

The mid-air drama began when the plane's crew pressed an emergency button which sent an automatic signal to air traffic controllers in Denpasar and Makassar.

It was about 30 minutes before the plane's scheduled landing time and the plane was 180 nautical miles from Denpasar.

Authorities in Bali believed the plane had been hijacked and rushed to put in place emergency procedures.

Co-manager at Bali airport, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita said that Lockley's condition looked "unstable".

He was initially taken in for questioning by the military which has jurisdiction at the airport but was later handed over to Bali police who said they would interview him along with the plane's cabin crew.

Police revealed Lockley is the holder of a Queensland driver's licence and had a licence to perform high-risk work and a plumbing industry council card, which were displayed during a press briefing.

Under Indonesian aviation law a person who commits an act to endanger flight safety and security faces two years in jail or one year for those who disturb a flight.

Bali Police Chief, Inspector Benny Mokalu, said no-one had been injured in the incident.

All passengers had left the plane and gone to the hotels and holidays.

He said that after banging on the cockpit door, Lockley had been taken to the cabin crew area and was sitting there when heavily-armed police entered the plane at Ngurah Rai airport.

Insp Mokalu said that cabin crew had told police that Lockley appeared to be "paranoid" but it wasn't clear why.

Col Sugiharto Prapto Waluyo, the commander of base operations at Ngurah Rai, said information was first received about 2pm local time when it was reported that the plane had been hijacked.

Treating the information seriously, Bali police, military and airport officials immediate went into hijack mode. The airport was closed and personnel were deployed to handle a hijack drama.

"We received information about a hijacking at 2pm local time from the airport general manager and air traffic control Makassar. We then conduct the procedure, as the initial information is a hijack.

Refused to comment ... Matt Lockley is seen at a holding room in Bali, Indonesia, Friday, after allegedly trying to attempt to break into the pilots' cockpit. Source: AP

"We didn't know if there was something dangerous in the plane or not. Is there a bomb or what. When the plane landed we steered the plane to park in two seven runway because we can't communicate with the pilot," Col Waluyo said.

In dramatic scenes, police had positioned a vehicle in front of the plane after it stopped and armed officers raced to the scene.

"We implemented the hijack arrest procedure as we didn't know if it's a hijacker or not. Our team then caught him, handcuffed him and brought him from the plane.

The Virgin Australia flight 41 from Brisbane to Bali had 139 passengers on board including 137 adults, two children and six crew members

As the drama unfolded, air traffic control in Bali diverted seven incoming flights to Surabaya, in East Java, one to Lombok and five flights were delayed and stopped from taking off.

In happier times ... Matt Lockley, who was held in an Indonesian police cell after a Virgin pilot set off a hijack alarm on the flight Matt was on to Bali. Picture: Facebook Source: Supplied

Initial reports from Indonesian military and media that suggested the plane had been hijacked was quickly dismissed when it became apparent the would-be cockpit impostor was reportedly a drunken or drug-affected Australian passenger.

Lockley was alleged to have been banging on the cockpit door of the plane, causing the pilots to become worried about a hijack. This was later dismissed.

Virgin's Bali manager Heru Sudjatmiko said it was a "miscommunication".

"I repeat, this is just a miscommunication. How the miscommunication occurred, I cannot answer because I wasn't there. But it's not true to say that the plane was hijacked," Mr Sudjatmiko told Idonesia's Metro TV station.

"I don't know exactly what happened when the pilot communicated with the air traffic controller at Ngurah Rai," he said.

Escorted into questioning ... Matt Lockley is handcuffed and pushed by Indonesian Air Force soldiers into Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar. Source: AFP

The Denpasar City Police chief Adj. Commissioner DjokoHariutomo told Kompas media that a drunk passenger tried to enter the cockpit of the Boeing B737-300 plane.

"We deployed a lot of personnel because we are informed that an aircraft was hijacked," Djoko said.

Palani Mohan, a passenger on a Garuda flight that was about to take off from Bali, said they were told an alleged hijacking had taken place at first, which would delay their flight.

"I saw at least five vehicles including military-style trucks, filled with men in uniform, rushing towards the plane.

"Then the Virgin plane taxied away, followed by the convoy of security forces. The flight attendant said it's been taken off to a different part of the airport.

"Bali airport seems to be in lockdown, we've been told no planes will be departing or arriving. The pilot's not allowing anyone off our plane."

A Virgin Australia spokesman said one other flight was affected en route from Sydney to Denpasar, and was diverted to Darwin Airport.

It was a decision made by the Indonesian authorities to shut Denpasar Airport, leaving multiple flights in the lurch.

"It depends on crew hours, but it is most likely that the plane will be refuelled tonight and then continue on to its destination," the spokesman said.

Magazine Photoshops baby George

Why on earth would you Photoshop this adorable mug? Source: Getty Images

WE'RE used to seeing Photoshopped images of celebrities on the cover of almost every magazine on the newsstand.

But this might be taking things too far.

American gossip magazine US Weekly has photoshopped a picture of Prince George on the cover of its upcoming issue.

The 9-month-old's face has been enhanced with emerald green eyes, rosier cheeks and given lighter strawberry-blonde hair. Even his lips are slightly more red.

The hi-tech gear of an Australian soldier

An Australian soldier pictured in Afghanistan. Source: Supplied

IN 15 years, the value of an Australian soldier's gear has jumped from $3,700 to almost $30,000.

The uniforms have been redesigned, the armour has been upgraded and the weapons have become even more deadly.

MORE: Cost of Aussie soldier's kit soars

All of those improvements raise our Diggers' chances of survival when they travel to the world's most dangerous places.

Of course, soldiers carry different types and amounts of equipment, depending on their duties. In some situations they're expected to carry up to 58 kilograms. But even their most basic gear is impressively hi-tech.

OK, so some soldiers carry a LOT of stuff. Source: News Corp Australia

CAMOUFLAGE UNIFORM

The army uses three kinds of camouflage, each of which is tailored to certain conditions. The first is a Disruptive Pattern print, which has been around since the 1980s and was developed using aerial photographs of Australian terrain.

Then there's a Disruptive Pattern Desert print, which incorporates different colours and is used in, you guessed it, desert conditions.

MORE: Soldiers dress for futuristic battlefield

Finally, there's the Multicam uniform, which has seven different colours and works in a wide range of environments. It also has built-in knee and elbow pads to help reduce the number minor injuries our soldiers suffer.

TIERED BODY ARMOUR

The Tiered Body Armour System gives soldiers extra protection, along with a series of pouches in which to place their ammunition and equipment.

The armour is designed to stop "small arms fire and fragmentation." It also has a quick release mechanism, which makes it quick and easy to remove the armour in an emergency.

ENHANCED COMBAT HELMET

The point of the helmet is pretty obvious — it's there to protect the soldier's head from bullets. But it's engineered to be lightweight and camouflaged as well.

The current standard issue combat helmet was introduced in 2004 after winning a competition between four rival designs.

OCULAR PROTECTION SYSTEM

Eye protection is extremely important, particularly in desert-like environments where sand and dust swirls through the air.

The Ballistic and Laser Ocular Protection System shields a soldier's eyes from enemies, as well as environmental threats. It comes in the form of goggles or sunglasses.

No, those aren't just ski goggles. Source: Supplied

F88 AUSTEYR RIFLE

The F88SA2 is the standard combat weapon for Australian infantry. It fires 5.56 x 45 millimetre ammunition at up to 850 rounds per minute, with an effective range of 300 metres. The rifle can even be fitted with a Grenade Launcher Attachment.

In other words, it's a very deadly weapon.

The gun is 79 centimetres long, and it weighs four kilograms when fully loaded.

Packs are used to carry supplies during operations that last longer than 24 hours. They come in several sizes, but the largest contains about 80 litres of space, which is enough to hold sleeping gear and more than three days' worth of food and water.

‘My date with the Duchess’

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 24 April 2014 | 14.41

The Duchess of Cambridge has stepped out in a green coat dress by Catherine Walker. Westfield's Gabe Robinson shows you how to get her latest look for much less.

William and Kate are greeted by Prime Minister Tony Abbott and wife Margie as they enter today's Parliamentary reception. AFP PHOTO Source: AFP

VOGUE Australia Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann was one of a select few invited to the Royal Reception at Parliament House today. Writing exclusively for news.com.au, McCann gives us a taste of her brush with royalty ...

I was wedged between a Wallaby and a War Hero when I met the Duchess of Cambridge at the Parliamentary Reception in Canberra this afternoon. Up close she is as beautiful in the flesh as she is in pictures — simply radiant.

I asked the Duchess how she and Prince William had enjoyed their tour, and if Prince George liked Australia. She said they had a lovely time and told me Prince George particularly loved watching the boats on Sydney Harbour.

Parliament House was abuzz with politicians, fashion designers and artistic types when the Duke and Duchess arrived for the lunchtime reception. The Duchess wore the same emerald green Catherine Walker coatdress she wore to meet young community members at the National Arboretum earlier in the day.

Bigger than who? Abbott's weird Royal quip

The Australian fashion industry was well represented, and the Duchess had obviously done her homework as she appeared to know a lot about the designers she met while being ushered through the crowd by Tony Abbott's wife Margie.

Yes, even invited guests can take sneaky camerphone pics. Here's Kate pressing the flesh. Source: Supplied

Designers including Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender, Kym Ellery, Camilla Franks, and sisters Nicole and Simone Zimmermann were there, as well as milliner Nerida Winter.

Camilla Franks was so excited to meet Royalty that she forgot all protocol, clasping the Duchess' hands and exclaiming: "Hello beautiful!"

The grinning Duchess congratulated Camilla on her label's 10th anniversary, then remarked that she loved the designer's green and gold (and very Australian!) dress, to which Camilla replied: "I'll take it off right now and give it to you!"

The Duchess talks to Camilla Franks, who offered to disrobe for her! Source: Supplied

Margie Abbott also introduced the Duchess to Akira Isogawa, who had been asked to design a scarf for the wife of the Japanese Prime Minister when the Abbotts recently visited Japan.

The Duchess told Akira that she chooses her own clothes, adding: "I love shopping!"

And despite being a Royal, she apparently pays for her own clothes. It is understood the Duchess bought the now famous $495 Ivory broderie anglaise Zimmermann dress that she wore on Friday out of her own money. It is the only Australian-designed dress she wore during her the Royal tour.

Amid the excitement of meeting the Duchess there were some other special moments: including Prince William's speech, and a divine performance from the blind indigenous singer Gurrumul Yunupingu.

After he finished, a string quartet started up to serenade the guests as the lunch wound up. Strangely, but amusingly, they played the most obvious tune: a cover of Lorde's smash hit Royals.

WHILE Aussies may cringe at the cliche-laden Modern Family Australia episode, it seems Americans have lapped it up.

US viewers have taken to social media in droves, tweeting their praise for the Down Under special after it aired today in the States.

Local fans are likely to be left reeling at some of the obvious references, but guess what - the Yanks loved it!

So what Aussie cliches left us cringing but our Northern counterparts rolling on the floor with laughter?

EVERYTHING IN AUSTRALIA WILL KILL YOU

"I don't know if I can keep Phil safe here anymore, I think he's going to die here," says Sofia Vergara's character after Phil Dunphy's many run-ins with wildlife. From jellyfish stings and mosquito bites to allergic reactions, the hapless dad just can't seem to stay out of harm's way.

Dunphy does conquer our dangerous nation in the end however, and Crocodile Dunphy is born. His new Paul Hogan-inspired nickname was even trending on Twitter within minutes of the show going to air.

ALL AUSSIES LOVE VEGEMITE

Of course the episode wasn't without a Vegemite reference or two, one which left Dunphy a little worse for wear. It seems we'll never escape our long-running "happy little Vegemites" moniker.

DINGOES STEAL EVERYTHING - INCLUDING LAPTOPS

BOXING KANGAROOS ARE A THING, BE ALERT

In one scene, Phil cops a blow to the head from a rogue kangaroo. Apparently angry roos are just hopping around Australia, ready to take a swipe at anyone or anything that dares get in their way.

ALL AUSSIE MEN ARE SURFER DUDES

The Modern Family message to single women seems to be - flop yourself on Bondi Beach wearing an itsy bitsy bikini and a hot surfer will fall into your lap. Who knew it was that simple?

AUSSIES AND KIWIS ARE 'THE SAME THING'

The ol' Kiwi-Aussie-same-same-but-different monster rears its offensive head in the episode. New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) plays a loud, obnoxious Kiwi television presenter who is mistaken as an Aussie by Mitch and Cam.

WE'LL SMASH A MEAT PIE, ANY HOUR ON THE CLOCK

We can't help but think the Kiwis might be slightly offended when they watch the episode and witness one of their most famous comedians running with the Aussie meat pie gag.

But for all the cliches and obvious references, the one-off episode really did showcase Australia at its best.

Between the shots of the cast strolling by the harbour, diving in the Barrier Reef and sunbaking on Bondi Beach, the one character that shone is our country itself.

Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter) dons a rashie and hits Bondi Beach. Source: Supplied

While the episode has already aired in the States, locals will have to wait until Sunday night to form their own opinion.

That is, those who didn't already download it via iTunes when it was accidentally made available in the Australian store this morning. Oops.

The Aussie Adventure episode is expected to be seen by 125 million viewers worldwide and it seems we might be expecting a few of them here soon if fan reaction is anything to go by:

Tourism Australia and Ten are hoping their partnership with the hit US sitcom brings major tourism dollars with it.

Oprah Winfrey's visit in 2010 saw almost half of US visitors say they were inspired to visit Australia after seeing her show.

Qantas, who hosted Ellen DeGeneres during her trip also reported a 22 per cent increase in inbound flights following the episode.

The family attempt to get photos "down under" while in front of the Opera House. Classic. Source: Supplied

The airline flew the Modern Family cast and crew out here for the production, and the Aussie episode even includes a short segment aboard the flying kangaroo at the conclusion of the show.

So, amid all the things we already knew about our beautiful country, here's the one thing we learnt from Modern Family, courtesy of doe-eyed teen Haley Dunphy: "This country's number one export is hot surfers."

Oh, and here we thought it was Kylie Minogue.

Royal lookalikes cashing in on lucky genes

Good timing: Royal lookalikes Simon Watkinson and Gabriella Douglas are in town. Source: News Corp Australia

THEY'RE the famous royal lookalikes making the big bucks, all thanks to their uncanny resemblance to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

In a perfectly timed visit, the couple's doppelgangers, Gabriella Douglas and Simon Watkinson, are in Australia this week, the very same week that the real deal is in town.

ROYAL DIARY: Kate and Wills hit Adelaide

The pair have been flown in to launch Peter Alexander's new Mother's Day campaign and were mobbed by shoppers at an in-store Myer appearance in Sydney's CBD today.

Douglas, who impersonates Kate as a part-time occupation, says she fell into the job after the royal wedding in 2011 after being constantly stopped on the street and compared to Middleton.

"A lot of my family had always said I looked like Kate when I was younger ... eventually my mum was like 'you should be earning a bit of extra pocket money', so she sent my photos to an agency and they asked me to do an amazing shoot for Grazia in the UK, which turned out to be an eight-page spread and a cover", the 26-year-old brunette tells news.com.au.

"It's just good fun really, I pick and choose the jobs that I really like and the ones I get to travel with."

Douglas has been working with Prince William lookalike, Simon Watkinson, for the past three years and said together, the pair manage to fool the public everywhere they go.

"Some people were fooled, some people were curtseying. One lady was crying when she thought she saw William," Douglas said of her Sydney appearance today.

"Everyone wants a photograph. A lot of the tourists are fooled, they ask: 'How's your granny?'"

Growing up in Windsor, Douglas attributes her similar accent to the fact that both she and Kate are from Berkshire and says she had a lot of exposure to the royals as a young girl but never saw herself imitating the daughter-in-law of the Queen.

"I actually met Prince William when I was younger, I had piano lessons at Eton College [where William went to school], and he held the door open for me one day."

Douglas, who also works for UK online marketplace notonthehighstreet.com, even has her own Kate Lookalike website and an Instagram account dedicated to her appearances.

Watkinson, who also has his own website, actually grew up in Adelaide but is now based in the UK and is currently the No.1 Duke of Cambridge impersonator in Europe.

"It's happened to be a good little side job for me," he said during an interview on Seven's Sunrise, adding that he has intently studied William's mannerisms and quirks over the years.

Asked whether Kate and Wills had seen what the pair were up to, Watkinson replied: "I've been told that they've seen the stuff that we do. I think they've got a pretty good sense of humour."

Fans can catch the "royals" at Myer in Melbourne on Saturday, and in Peter Alexander stores in Perth on Sunday and Adelaide on Monday.

The Real Housewives scandals you won’t see on TV

Gina Liano with her partner of eight years, Dean Giannarelli. Source: News Limited

The season finale of The Real Housewives of Melbourne screens this Sunday night, and as the show heats up, so too do the real-life goings-on of the women involved.

In fact, it seems that most of the Housewives drama is happening off-screen at the moment. Here's a wrap-up of the craziest Real Housewives scandals of the past few days:

1) THAT anonymous blog post

Online reaction to the show in recent weeks has been almost unanimous in its support for barrister Gina Liano, who has appeared, on camera, to show remarkable restraint in the face of verbal attacks by Andrea, Lydia, and friend of 20 years Janet.

On Sunday, an anonymous blog appeared online that presented an alternative view of the show's public favourite.

Letter2Gina is a prolonged, badly-written attack on Liano written by someone who claims to have worked on the show. Among the cheap digs — Gina wears too much perfume, she smokes on set (yawn) — were intimations that Gina's positive portrayal on the show is perhaps due to her litigious, controlling nature.

Fact or fiction? Either way, the blog gained traction when fellow Housewife Lydia retweeted it — causing many to question whether she was in fact behind the anonymous post. Oh warw.

Lydia retweeted a link to the offending blog post. Source: Twitter

Foxtel have denied the blog post came from anybody in their camp, posting a statement on the RHOM Facebook page that reads in part:

Some of you may have seen an anonymous blog that appeared on social media recently. This blog has nothing to do with Arena, Foxtel or the production company, Matchbox Pictures and while social media discussion about the series is welcome, we encourage everyone to be respectful when making any comments about the housewives.

2) Gina's man unmasked

Yes, he of the 'geographically impossible' relationship — Gina's partner of eight years, who Jackie 'psychically predicted' had cheated on her in the first episode. After a temporary break, the pair have reconciled. The mystery man is Florida-based Australian property developer Dean Giannarelli, and while the pair were spotted at last month's Melbourne Grand Prix, Liano told TV Week she had no plans to settle down.

'I don't think marriage is what either of us needs," she said.

3) Will Gina quit the show?

She's hinted as much in an interview with TV Week. "I think it would be difficult for me to put myself in that position again," Gina told them.

"When I went into it the first time, I had no idea I would be targeted and it would be such a hate campaign."

It seems unlikely she would leave the show, though, given her status as the audience favourite. Just look at the current result of this poll over on fansite iRealHousewives, with more than 3,000 people voting for their favourite Melbourne Housewife:

Results of the 'favourite Housewife' poll. Look, Andrea and Lydia could charge up to the front at any moment. Source: Supplied

4) Has the bullying gone too far?

As the slanging matches on the show have escalated in recent weeks, Mama Mia's resident recapper even quit her post in dramatic style, declaring that the show "is awful and I don't want to write about it anymore." (Fear not, dear reader, we'll continue to bring you our weekly recaps. We're going to see this thing out to the bitter end, together).

In particular, Housewives Lydia and Andrea seem to have been caught by surprise at the public backlash against them, and two weeks ago forced producers to edit out some of their harsher comments about Gina at the last minute.

Housewives Lydia (l) and Andrea have faced a barrage of online criticism from fans of the show. Picture Simon Cross Source: News Corp Australia

We can reveal that review DVDs of the show, which usually arrive at news.com.au more than a week in advance, have still not been sent out for Sunday's finale. Foxtel say the episode, filmed months ago, is still being edited. The preview at the tail-end of last week's episode teased an epic showdown between Gina and Andrea that ended with Gina calling her nemesis a 'f**king moron'. Will that scene even make the cut come Sunday?

5) Just what will be revealed on the reunion show?

As public criticism has grown louder, several of the ladies have taken to Twitter to promise that 'all will be revealed' on the Alex Perry-hosted reunion show, already filmed and screening in two parts from May 4. Will we finally learn the details of that legal email Gina forwarded to the other ladies? Will Andrea and Lydia explain to viewers exactly why they've attacked Gina so much in recent weeks? And will Jackie ever stop saying 'Shine shine shine'?

The Real Housewives of Melbourne will feature six new housewives who enjoy the lavish, pampered and cultured lifestyle who own private jets, amazing homes and are married to high profile businessmen, including one to a rock star and another to a plastic surgeon

What Kate really, really wants

What has caught Kate Middleton's attention? Source: Supplied

FORGET the designer dresses, this is what the Duchess of Cambridge really digs on her Aussie visit.

Turns out Kate can't resist the lure of a loom band.

What, you might ask?

Loom bands are brightly coloured plastic bracelets that are made out of numerous tiny, rubber bands. But they have become so popular across Aussie primary schools, some principals have been forced to ban the accessories out of fear of schoolyard fighting.

Prince William was spotted sporting one on his wrist earlier this month and now it looks like Kate Middleton wants one to call her own too.

During the Royal couple's tour of the Easter Show on Good Friday, the Duchess spotted Esther and Ella Nelson holding out their homemade loom bands made specifically for the Duchess ... and she made a bee line for the ultimate 'it' accessories.

"Hey, William, I have one to match yours now!" Source: Supplied

"That's pretty special for them, they made a lot of effort," said mum Rachael Nelson, who made a special visit to the Show with her girls, aged 8 and 7.

"(Catherine) was so lovely, she apologised for keeping us all waiting and was very grateful for the bands. She was so polite and well spoken, thanked the girls for the bracelets."

According to Mrs Nelson the Duchess initially walked passed the girls, but backtracked after spotting the bands.

"She stopped because she saw the girls with the bracelets over the fence and walked back to grab them. Realistically they are just pieces of plastic but she made them feel very special.

"She was more stunning in person, she made my children feel so special, just in her way, she was so grateful for the loom bands."

Choice between burning car and lions

A family was forced to flee their burning car as it overheated in the Longleat Safari Park within the Lion enclosure. Courtesy: SWNS TV

A MOTHER and her two children were faced with a terrifying dilemma when their car caught fire in the lion enclosure at a safari park.

Helen Clements and her two children were visiting Britain's Longleat Safari Park when their vehicle overheated and smoke began rising from the car.

"It was getting thicker and thicker and obviously coming into us, and then we saw flames," Ms Clements told the BBC.

The frightened mum blasted her horn and both she and her son opened their doors, before rangers came running towards them.

Ablaze ... the family's car goes up in flames in the Longleat Safari Park's lion enclosure.

Twice as dangerous ... rangers told the terrified family to stay in their burning car in order to avoid the roaming lions. Source: Supplied

Scared that the family were at risk of being attacked by the lions roaming around the park in Wiltshire, the rangers told them to stay inside their vehicle.

"Unfortunately they were shouting to us: 'Get back in the car, do not get out of the car'," Ms Clements said.

"It was a situation of - what do you do? Do you get out of the car because you're on fire? And they're telling you to get back in the car, so that was the dilemma."

Her son got out of the car and ran but Ms Clements called the child back, the BBC said.

Within minutes, a ranger pulled up in a vehicle and she and the children jumped inside before being driven to safety.

Despite their terrifying ordeal, the family, can see the funny side.

"It could have been in the flamingoes or the camels but no, it had to be in the lion enclosure," Ms Clements said.

FOX has fired a veteran executive who used her company email account to plan aid for loved ones of passengers on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

Darlene Tipton says she emailed a woman whose boyfriend was aboard the plane to propose a fundraising effort.

Her idea was to bring swift financial help to families and other loved ones, sparing them lengthy court fights.

Fox spokesman Scott Grogin says Tipton's "conduct and communications" violated company policy. He's confirmed Tipton has left the company.

Tipton says she hopes to continue her drive, soliciting contributions through a fundraising website.

Writing a column for Albury-Wodonga's The Border Mail, Fevola said Carlton's decision to part company with "fan favourite" Eddie Betts had cost the club on and off the field.

He also wrote that the Blues "might have won a flag" if West Coast Eagles full-forward Josh Kennedy was still at the club.

"Carlton wouldn't pay him (Betts) the money he wanted, so he went to Adelaide where he could get it," Fevola said.

Carlton midfielder Chris Judd says he is every chance of making his return from an Achilles injury against the Bulldogs on Sunday.

"If the Blues didn't have the money, then fair enough, let him go.

"But they went out and spent $700,000-a-year for four years on Dale Thomas.

"He may take the occasional specky and get his 15 touches but so what?

"He won't win you a game off his own boot."

Fevola suggests Carlton lost in the deal that brought Brownlow medallist and former captain Chris Judd to Visy Park.

The Blues parted with key Kennedy to snare the silky midfielder set to make his return from an Achilles complaint on Sunday.

Under-fire Blues coach Mick Malthouse has been grilled on Channel Nine's Footy Classified; the Carlton coach stoically defended his coaching style but was less enthusiastic about the playing group at his disposal.

"Juddy has been an absolute superstar but, looking back on it, who won that deal ... it's tough," Fevola said.

"Josh Kennedy is now a superstar of the competition at West Coast and right now probably more valuable than Juddy is.

"Who knows? The Blues might have won a flag if he was still there."

Fevola was sacked by Carlton after his drunken antics at the 2009 Brownlow gala, the final chapter in a series of off-field incidents.

Brisbane recruited the star full forward on a big-money deal only to let him go 17 games later following further off-field breaches.

Fevola said Carlton's winless start to its 150th anniversary was "embarrassing", while outgoing president Stephen Kernahan, probably the club's greatest player, was meant to be six-month appointment when Richard Pratt was sick.

"There were high hopes when Mick Malthouse came to the club and beat Richmond in the finals ... but now there's nothing for the fans to cheer about," Fevola said.

"Losing to Melbourne last Saturday might just be the darkest day Carlton has had in a decade."

Brissie crowd goes wild for royals

A GROUP of protesters has failed to ruin the royal couple's Brisbane visit with thousands of people giving the couple an enthusiastic welcome.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flew in to the Royal Australian Air Force base at Amberley, west of Brisbane, about 11am, where an honour guard greeted them and there was a flyover of fighter jets.

The princess wore a "snorkel blue" Lasa Poppy Print Dress by one of her favourite designers L.K. Bennett. The dress retails for £245 ($440 AUD), and yes, it has now sold out.

Kate's choice of dress was a nod to the importance of the poppy, as a symbol of remembrance in the military community.

Amberley Air Base is Australia's biggest operational military base and Defence Force chief David Hurley, and his wife Linda, greeted the couple on the tarmac.

A military band played God Save the Queen and the Australian national anthem.

The couple was also welcomed by Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley, Premier Campbell Newman and Defence Minister David Johnston.

The pair toured Squadron 1, which is the first Super Hornet squadron outside the United States.

Prince William spent seven and a half years in the RAF before retiring to take up official duties and happily stepped into the flight seat of one of the fighter aircraft.

The prince then stepped into the back seat - where the weapons are controlled, allowing Kate to take the pilot's seat. She spent some time in the cockpit, asking questions of her RAAF hosts.

Prince William and his wife then planted a tree in the memorial garden before meeting with four families who lost members during the military operation in Afghanistan.

The base's memorial garden honours the service and sacrifice of members of the Royal Australian Air Force and the tree planted was a Queensland native - the Plunkett mallee tree - and is the official floral emblem of Ipswich.

Wing Commander Paul Rickert, who is deputy honour guard commander, said some of the family members the royals met had not been back to Amberley since the ramp ceremony, the memorial service held for fallen soldiers at the airport.

"It's quite significant for those family members ... to have that closure and have this visit back to Amberley as a positive experience," he told ABC radio.

Widow Nicole Pearce said she was very honoured to meet the couple and that Kate was "absolutely beautiful, very easy to talk to".

"She asked how long David had been in the military for and how long he'd been overseas when he was killed," Ms Pearce told Nine News.

"She was sincerely quite sad for us to think David was only over there for two weeks when he was killed.

"She seemed very very genuine and she was very sweet."

Ms Pearce described it as a "bitter sweet" occasion.

"I'd rather have Dave here, and the reason we're here is because he's not.

"But I think he would be really proud, really honoured to think we had an opportunity like this. "It's not every day you get to meet royalty."

Afterwards the couple attended a civic reception in Brisbane and took a brief public walk.

About 10,000 people went wild for the couple at Brisbane's parkland precinct, cheering and chanting "Kate, Kate, Kate".

The adoring crowd, up to 20 people deep in some places, showered the couple with flowers and with gifts for Prince George.

Cheers and shrieks followed the couple as they made their way along the route, under a clear blue sky and in 28C heat. The royals took their time the greeting thousands of well wishers.

The Duchess needed an army of helpers to pass on the gifts handed over security barricades - everything from modest posies of carnations, to stuffed kangaroos, chocolate bunnies, and a soccer ball bearing a map of Australia.

It was a much more enthusiastic reception than a group of about 30 protesters hoped to give the couple just an hour before.

The Aboriginal land rights activists protested outside the Brisbane Convention Centre ahead of the couple's arrival. They held up signs, one of them read "give back what you stole", they called the royals dole bludgers and chanted "thieves".

About 50 police officers moved on the group of about 30 protesters, pushing them out of sight, ahead of the royal arrival.

One activist was ushered away after going behind barricades but police said no arrests had been made.

Security was tight around South Bank ahead of the couple's arrival, with snipers spotted on nearby roofs.

The couple will return to Sydney tonight. Tomorrow they will attend a Easter Sunday church service and will visit Taronga Zoo.

Yesterday the couple spent the day at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and in Manly, visiting sick children at Bear Cottage before watching a lifesaving demonstration.

Radiant in a white lace dress by Australian designer Zimmermann, Catherine notably did not remove her Stuart Weitzman wedge heels for a stroll on Manly Beach.

Her previous day's outfit, a patterned dress by Diane von Furstenberg sold out within hours, but the Zimmermann's Roamer Day Dress will not be in stores until June

Catherine delivered her first speech in Australia after speaking with the young residents of Bear Cottage and said the haven for dying children was an inspiration.

"First-class delivery of children's palliative care is life-changing,'' she said, as the Prime Minister looked on with the new NSW Premier, Mike Baird.

Catherine's sure touch and gentle humour is the talk of the tour. While her husband spoke privately to the families, she spent time with the ill children, speaking quietly to them.

At the Royal Easter Show, the Duke and Duchess got a taste of regional Australia.

Checking out alpaca wool from the northern region, Catherine commented the fleece could make a good toupe for her husband.

So awkward.

The well-heeled Duchess Kate and Prince William were at Manly Beach in Sydney this afternoon for a demonstration by the local surf club.

And there was a bit of a fuss on social media about the un-Australian choice of footwear.

Earlier, the Royals continued their royal Aussie tour with a visit to the Royal Easter Show in Sydney.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the showground in Homebush, and social media quickly went into overdrive at the sight of Kate's dress choice for the outing.

The stylish royal opted for a cream lace dress by Australian fashion label Zimmermann and teamed it with a pair of tan wedges and a simple clutch.

It is the first Aussie designer she has worn since arriving Down Under.

It was due to arrive in stores worldwide this June but the release date has been moved forward in response to overwhelming demand.

Within minutes the Zimmermann website was struggling as online buyers rushed to snap up the garment. No doubt Sydney sisters Nicole and Simone Zimmermann will be thrilled.

The lawyers inside murder trial of the century

Oscar Pistorius has finished his gruelling five day testimony on the witness stand, reading a poem from a Valentines Day card his former girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp had prepared for him the day she was killed.

BOOM. Welcome to Nel town. Source: Getty Images

IT'S the legal equivalent of a bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Two talented, brutal attorneys at the peak of their powers, fighting each other for the heavyweight title before an audience of millions.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel and defence lawyer Barry Roux are the men driving Oscar Pistorius's murder trial. They're two of the most feared lawyers in South Africa, having built successful careers in parallel over the past three decades.

Nel has been prosecuting alleged criminals for more than 30 years. Roux has been defending them for 31. Both men have drawn upon that experience to eviscerate witnesses in the Pistorius case.

So, how do South Africa's heavyweight lawyers stack up against each other? Are they really so evenly matched?

GERRIE NEL

History

The biggest triumph of Nel's career was his successful prosecution of former police chief and Interpol president Jackie Selebi.

It was a confronting case for South Africans, who were forced to admit the man leading their nation's fight against crime was a criminal himself. Selebi was convicted of corruption (he overlooked drug trafficking in return for bribes), and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Selebi case was a trial in more ways than one for Nel. In January of 2008, 20 police officers stormed into the lawyer's home and arrested him, in front of his wife and children, for "fraud". The charge turned out to be nonsense. It was an intimidation tactic, meant to disrupt his investigation into Selebi.

Nel refused to back down. That sums up the man pretty well.

He also served as the head of an official crime-fighting agency whose operatives were called "The Scorpions". They investigated organised crime and corruption between 2001 and 2008.

Within three years of being founded, The Scorpions had prosecuted 380 cases with a conviction rate of 93 per cent, the Mirror reports. They even raided the home of South Africa's then-Deputy President Jacob Zuma.

You get the idea. Nel has been a determined, wildly successful prosecutor for years.

Style

Within the legal community, Nel is known as "the pit bull". That's because he cross-examines witnesses with unrivalled aggression.

"He likes to rattle witnesses. To emotionally rattle them to see if he can get them to give him contradicting versions. That is his style," says South African defence attorney Ulrich Roux.

"He's definitely the best prosecutor in South Africa. He's proved that, and I think he will continue to prove that."

Nel's relentless and confrontational style was best demonstrated in the Selebi trial. He called the former Interpol president an "arrogant liar", and kept him on the stand for two weeks.

He's not scared of controversy either. A week ago, he shocked onlookers in court by displaying a graphic image of Reeva Steenkamp's fatal head wound and comparing it to a watermelon, with Oscar Pistorius on the stand.

It was a ruthless tactic, but according to Nel, it was absolutely necessary.

Best moment so far

Nel's five-day cross-examination of Pistorius could end up being decisive. He forced the athlete to contradict his own testimony several times (Pistorius claimed those "mistakes" were due to tiredness), and more than once reduced him to an emotional wreck.

The most telling moment came when Nel pointed out Steenkamp's position behind the toilet door. She was standing up against the door, facing it, when Pistorius shot her. Nel used that evidence to suggest the pair were talking to each other before Pistorius pulled the trigger.

Best parody

Brad O'Regan, a producer for the South African radio station Highveld 94.7, put together this rap tribute to Nel.

"They call me Gerrie Nel, and I am mad as hell, and when I get you on the stand I will make you tell. I don't have no feelings, new lies I'm revealing, I get emotions in the court to hit the ceiling."

It's undeniably catchy.

BARRY ROUX

History

Roux does not focus solely on criminal law. His practice also deals with "insurance, delictual, aviation, matrimonial, medical negligence, general contractual and liquidation work". But he has still featured in some of South Africa's biggest criminal trials, with great success.

Roux represented Scottish businessman Dave King, who was facing a long stint in jail for avoiding a tax bill of 2.3 billion rand. After a marathon 13-year run through the courts, Roux managed to reduce his punishment to a fine of just 700 million rand. King avoided jail altogether.

Another of Roux's high profile tax evasion cases involved a mining magnate called Roger Kebble. The charges in that case were withdrawn altogether.

He never ran a group called The Scorpions, but Roux's career has been just as successful as Nel's. His rumoured salary of up to $A10,000 per day for defending Pistorius is proof enough of that.

Give 'em both barrels, Barry. Source: Getty Images

Style

Roux can be a patronising, exasperated presence in the courtroom. He picks away at witnesses, asking them the same questions repeatedly until they slip up. His style often switches in an instant, from charming and absent-minded to biting and sarcastic.

Daily Mirror writer Lucy Thornton has described Roux as a lawyer who "goes from bumbling poodle to snarling rottweiler in seconds, terrifying witnesses."

His tactics can be devastatingly effective. Roux lulls witnesses into a false sense of security before unleashing direct, piercing questions that prey upon their emotions and reduce them to a state of utter confusion.

Barry gives Oscar some firm legal advice. Source: Getty Images

Best moment so far

Roux's biggest courtroom masterclass actually came during Pistorius's bail hearing, just six days after Steenkamp's death. He completely destroyed the credibility of police detective Hilton Botha, an officer with 24 years of experience.

Botha started the day firmly in the prosecution's corner. By the time Roux was through with him, the detective had conceded that he found nothing at the scene which contradicted Pistorius's version of events.

"I don't have any facts," he admitted at one point.

Nel didn't dare call Botha to the stand during the actual trial. Roux had turned him into a liability, if not a running joke. How's that for a knockout punch?

Best parody

This one comes courtesy of Roger Goode, who hosts a radio show on 5FM. It's a parody of Pharrell's hit Happy. The chorus will be stuck in your head for days.

HEAD TO HEAD

Nel and Roux have clashed in a high profile murder case before. The defendants in that trial were two men called Casper Greeff and Christopher Njeje.

Greeff was accused of hiring Njeje to kill his wife, Estelle, in 1999. Njeje proceeded to cut her throat with a blunt knife.

Nel won the case. Both Greeff and Njeje were found guilty of murder with direct intent and sentenced to life in prison.
