‘My date with the Duchess’

VOGUE Australia Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann was one of a select few invited to the Royal Reception at Parliament House today. Writing exclusively for news.com.au, McCann gives us a taste of her brush with royalty ...

I was wedged between a Wallaby and a War Hero when I met the Duchess of Cambridge at the Parliamentary Reception in Canberra this afternoon. Up close she is as beautiful in the flesh as she is in pictures — simply radiant.

I asked the Duchess how she and Prince William had enjoyed their tour, and if Prince George liked Australia. She said they had a lovely time and told me Prince George particularly loved watching the boats on Sydney Harbour.

Parliament House was abuzz with politicians, fashion designers and artistic types when the Duke and Duchess arrived for the lunchtime reception. The Duchess wore the same emerald green Catherine Walker coatdress she wore to meet young community members at the National Arboretum earlier in the day.

Bigger than who? Abbott's weird Royal quip

The Australian fashion industry was well represented, and the Duchess had obviously done her homework as she appeared to know a lot about the designers she met while being ushered through the crowd by Tony Abbott's wife Margie.

Designers including Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender, Kym Ellery, Camilla Franks, and sisters Nicole and Simone Zimmermann were there, as well as milliner Nerida Winter.

Camilla Franks was so excited to meet Royalty that she forgot all protocol, clasping the Duchess' hands and exclaiming: "Hello beautiful!"

The grinning Duchess congratulated Camilla on her label's 10th anniversary, then remarked that she loved the designer's green and gold (and very Australian!) dress, to which Camilla replied: "I'll take it off right now and give it to you!"

Margie Abbott also introduced the Duchess to Akira Isogawa, who had been asked to design a scarf for the wife of the Japanese Prime Minister when the Abbotts recently visited Japan.

The Duchess told Akira that she chooses her own clothes, adding: "I love shopping!"

And despite being a Royal, she apparently pays for her own clothes. It is understood the Duchess bought the now famous $495 Ivory broderie anglaise Zimmermann dress that she wore on Friday out of her own money. It is the only Australian-designed dress she wore during her the Royal tour.

Amid the excitement of meeting the Duchess there were some other special moments: including Prince William's speech, and a divine performance from the blind indigenous singer Gurrumul Yunupingu.

After he finished, a string quartet started up to serenade the guests as the lunch wound up. Strangely, but amusingly, they played the most obvious tune: a cover of Lorde's smash hit Royals.
