Modern Family Oz is no meat pie short of a picnic

WHILE Aussies may cringe at the cliche-laden Modern Family Australia episode, it seems Americans have lapped it up.

US viewers have taken to social media in droves, tweeting their praise for the Down Under special after it aired today in the States.

Local fans are likely to be left reeling at some of the obvious references, but guess what - the Yanks loved it!

So what Aussie cliches left us cringing but our Northern counterparts rolling on the floor with laughter?

EVERYTHING IN AUSTRALIA WILL KILL YOU

"I don't know if I can keep Phil safe here anymore, I think he's going to die here," says Sofia Vergara's character after Phil Dunphy's many run-ins with wildlife. From jellyfish stings and mosquito bites to allergic reactions, the hapless dad just can't seem to stay out of harm's way.

Dunphy does conquer our dangerous nation in the end however, and Crocodile Dunphy is born. His new Paul Hogan-inspired nickname was even trending on Twitter within minutes of the show going to air.

ALL AUSSIES LOVE VEGEMITE

Of course the episode wasn't without a Vegemite reference or two, one which left Dunphy a little worse for wear. It seems we'll never escape our long-running "happy little Vegemites" moniker.

DINGOES STEAL EVERYTHING - INCLUDING LAPTOPS

This joke left us a bit cold. Claire loses her much-prized laptop, A.K.A. "her baby", to a wild dog. Cue the 'dingo ate my baby' analogy. Still too soon?

BOXING KANGAROOS ARE A THING, BE ALERT

In one scene, Phil cops a blow to the head from a rogue kangaroo. Apparently angry roos are just hopping around Australia, ready to take a swipe at anyone or anything that dares get in their way.

ALL AUSSIE MEN ARE SURFER DUDES

The Modern Family message to single women seems to be - flop yourself on Bondi Beach wearing an itsy bitsy bikini and a hot surfer will fall into your lap. Who knew it was that simple?

AUSSIES AND KIWIS ARE 'THE SAME THING'

The ol' Kiwi-Aussie-same-same-but-different monster rears its offensive head in the episode. New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) plays a loud, obnoxious Kiwi television presenter who is mistaken as an Aussie by Mitch and Cam.

WE'LL SMASH A MEAT PIE, ANY HOUR ON THE CLOCK

We can't help but think the Kiwis might be slightly offended when they watch the episode and witness one of their most famous comedians running with the Aussie meat pie gag.

But for all the cliches and obvious references, the one-off episode really did showcase Australia at its best.

Between the shots of the cast strolling by the harbour, diving in the Barrier Reef and sunbaking on Bondi Beach, the one character that shone is our country itself.

While the episode has already aired in the States, locals will have to wait until Sunday night to form their own opinion.

That is, those who didn't already download it via iTunes when it was accidentally made available in the Australian store this morning. Oops.

The Aussie Adventure episode is expected to be seen by 125 million viewers worldwide and it seems we might be expecting a few of them here soon if fan reaction is anything to go by:

Tourism Australia and Ten are hoping their partnership with the hit US sitcom brings major tourism dollars with it.

Oprah Winfrey's visit in 2010 saw almost half of US visitors say they were inspired to visit Australia after seeing her show.

Qantas, who hosted Ellen DeGeneres during her trip also reported a 22 per cent increase in inbound flights following the episode.

The airline flew the Modern Family cast and crew out here for the production, and the Aussie episode even includes a short segment aboard the flying kangaroo at the conclusion of the show.

So, amid all the things we already knew about our beautiful country, here's the one thing we learnt from Modern Family, courtesy of doe-eyed teen Haley Dunphy: "This country's number one export is hot surfers."

Oh, and here we thought it was Kylie Minogue.
