TUCKED away in Northern Ireland, near the village of Armoy lies a stunning site: A row of Beech trees that curve in crazy cool ways. Welcome to Bregagh Road.

The trees, planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century to dress up the road towards their manor, sit intertwined, creating a truly bizarre site in any season.

Now called The Dark Hedges by locals and tourists alike (Northern Ireland started using images from the road in their tourism campaigns in the late 1990s), the site has been used for scenes from Game of Thrones.

Rumour has it that the supernatural "Grey Lady" now haunts the road, especially the last beech tree at dusk. Some say she is the ghost of a maid from a nearby house who died in mysterious circumstances centuries ago. Another theory is that she's a lost spirit from an abandoned graveyard that's believed to lie hidden nearby.

Bieber to face fresh assault charges

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 30 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Cell phone footage shows Justin Bieber enjoying the beach in Panama, days after his arrest in Florida.

JUSTIN Bieber has turned himself into police in Toronto to face an assault charge dating back to December. Oh, and Americans want him permanently deported from the USA as well...

According to CBC news, the 19-year-old will be charged in connection to the alleged assault of a limousine driver who drove Bieber and his entourage around on December 29, 2013.

He'll be given a notice to appear in court at a later date.

As if he doesn't have enough problems, …Bieber now also faces the threat of deportation from his adopted home of America, after thousands of people signed a petition to get him kicked out of the country.

The White House will review a petition calling for Justin Bieber to be deported from the US after 100,000 people signed it.

In just a few days, the petition, which is titled "Deport Justin Bieber and revoke his green card", reached 100,000 signatures, meaning it will automatically be reviewed by White House staff, who must officially respond to it.

The petition was posted online on January 23, the day after the Canadian pop star was arrested for DUI and resisting arrest in Miami, and it's still going strong.

The petition reads: "We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture.

"We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing, Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked.

"He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."

Biebs, who's been licking his wounds on the beaches of Panama, will appear in front of a judge on February 14.

In a new interview with GQ, Bieber's manager Scooter Braun has said that he needs to let Bieber make his own "mistakes".

"It's the same as being with a kid growing up, as a parent. There is a point where you guide them and there's a point where you feel like you've planted enough seeds and you watch them make mistakes.

"My responsibility is to always be there when they fall, always be there to help them get back up. But at some point I need to let them fail, because if they don't they're going to have no humanity."

What the heck is going on here?

Gives new meaning to a Mexican wave at the cricket. Source: NewsComAu

LET it never again be said that the curation of a cricket ground is dull work.

Marcus Pamplin, the curator at Hobart's Blundstone Arena, clearly thought he'd have a bit of fun ahead of tonight's T20 match against England.

Spurning tradition, Mr Pamplin and his ground staff mowed an interesting, wavy pattern into the grass at the stadium, prompting some viewers to speculate about the man's blood alcohol levels.

Other viewers with keener eyes swore the pattern was actually a map of Tasmania, with the wavy bits representing water.

This mystery desperately needed to be solved, so we spoke to Marcus Pamplin, who confirmed that the pattern is indeed a map of Tassie. It was actually planned well in advance.

"We kind of built up to it, so we've had a couple of Big Bash games here and we did the wavy lines one way, and the next game we went the other way so it kind of criss-crossed, then we did the map of Tassie during those last six days," Mr Pamplin said.

"It's all fun and the guys do a great job with it."

That sounds like a rather complex operation. We just think it's fantastic to see a curator displaying some creativity.

The men's international T20 between Australia and England starts at 7:35pm local time. Come back later for coverage of the game! If it's a boring one, we might even talk more about the grass.

Plan to wipe out Syria's deadly arsenal

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 28 Januari 2014 | 14.41

The first shipment of chemical material has been removed from Syria under a US-Russian led deal.

A SPECIALLY-equipped US naval ship departed for Italy on Monday on a groundbreaking mission to destroy Syria's most dangerous chemical agents, Pentagon officials said.

After setting off from the port of Norfolk on the Virginia coast, the MV Cape Ray is due to arrive in the southern port of Gioia Tauro in about "two to three weeks," spokesman Colonel Steven Warren told reporters.

The move comes after the UN Security Council last year backed a US-Russian deal to remove and destroy Syria's chemical arsenal.

The agreement was brokered as a way to avert US missile strikes that Washington threatened after a chemical attack near Damascus, which Washington and other Western governments blamed on the regime.

UN CONFIRMS SYRIA USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS

Under the accord, Syria's entire chemical arsenal is to be eliminated by June 30.

The 650-foot (197.5 meter) cargo ship has been outfitted with two large portable hydrolysis systems designed to neutralise the lethal chemical agents.

Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel sent a letter to Captain Rick Jordan and the 135-member crew telling them they were embarking on a "historic mission."

SYRIAN TORTURE PHOTOS REVEAL 'SYSTEMATIC KILLING' OF DETAINEES

"You are about to accomplish something no one has tried," Hagel wrote in the letter released by the Defense Department.

"You will be destroying at sea one of the world's largest stockpiles of chemical weapons and helping make a safer world," he wrote.

The first batch of Syria's chemical weapons materials are moved out of the country for destruction, beginning a crucial phase of an internationally backed disarmament program delayed by war and technical problems. Mana Rabiee reports.

The Cape Ray was initially supposed to head out earlier on Monday but engine problems delayed the scheduled departure, officials said.

10 SIMPLE POINTS TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND SYRIA CONFLICT

The ship has a crew of 35 civilians operating the vessel and will have a 63-member team in charge of the hydrolysis units as well as a security force on board.

The hydrolysis machines will mix heated water and other chemicals to break down the lethal agents, resulting in a sludge equivalent to industrial toxic waste.

The arrangement will see some of the most dangerous agents neutralised on the US ship at sea, as no country was ready to host an operation to destroy the chemicals.

The chemicals will be loaded on to the Cape Ray at the Italian port and then taken to an undisclosed location for destruction. The Pentagon stressed the ship's work was not an environmental cause for alarm.

"No hydrolysis byproducts will be released into the sea or air. M/V Cape Ray will comply with all applicable international laws, regulations, and treaties," a spokesman said.

The materials are the deadliest in Syria's 1,290-tonne declared arsenal and include mustard gas and the ingredients for the nerve agents sarin and VX.

The destruction of the chemicals could take between 45 to 90 days, according to the Pentagon.

The macabre rape chamber of Colonel Gaddafi

Written By Unknown on Senin, 27 Januari 2014 | 14.41

It's now been revealed Gaddafi's victims include hundreds of teenage girls who throughout his 42-year reign were beaten, raped and forced to become his sex slaves.

IT HAS been more than two years since the capture and death of Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan dictator whose reign subjected an impoverished people to four decades of murder and terror. When the bedraggled former leader was hauled out of a drainpipe and shot in October 2011, his death ended the bloody NATO-led civil war that had ravaged the country since the start of that year.

The full horror of his brutality has been slow to emerge, with many Libyans still fearing retaliation by those who continue to be loyal to their late leader. But it can now be revealed that the most heartbreaking of Gaddafi's victims include hundreds, possibly thousands of teenage girls who, throughout his 42-year reign, were beaten, raped and forced to become his sex slaves.

Many were virgins kidnapped from schools and universities and kept prisoner for years in a specially designed secret sex lair hidden within Tripoli University or his many palaces.

In the 26 months since he was deposed, Gaddafi's den - where he regularly raped girls as young as 14 - has remained locked. But today its gaudy interior, where the colonel brutalised his victims, can be seen for the first time in photographs from a hard-hitting BBC4 documentary.

Inside the small, nondescript single-storey complex, the girls were forced to watch pornography to 'educate' them for their degrading treatment at the hands of Gaddafi. And even those who did manage to escape were often shunned by their deeply religious Muslim families who believed their family honour had been tainted.

When the dictator's body was dragged through the streets by a baying mob, just hours after he was beaten and shot in the head, the hastily convened transitional government moved swiftly to seal off the sex dungeon. They feared the full extent of Gaddafi's debased and lewd lifestyle would horrify the Western world and cause deep embarrassment to Libya.

One of the rooms holds little more than a double bed, lit by an orange lamp. Its 1970s decor and grimy jacuzzi - all left exactly as they were when Gaddafi last used it - give it a seedy and gloomy air. But even more chilling is the clinical gynaecological suite in an adjoining room. It was here, on two beds fitted with stirrups behind a table laden with surgical instruments, that Gaddafi's young victims were examined to ensure they had no sexually transmittable diseases. And here they were forced to undergo abortions if they became pregnant.

They, however, were the lucky ones. Other young victims were so badly abused that they were dumped in car parks and on waste ground, and left to die.

Degrading: This is the fully-fitted gynaecological suite where young girls would be placed in one of the two beds and checked for STDs before they were sent in to the waiting dictator. Source: Supplied

Gaddafi's modus operandi was to tour schools and universities where female students were invited to his lectures. As he spoke before his hushed audience, he would silently scan the room seeking out attractive girls. Before leaving he would pat those he had 'selected' on the head. Within hours his private bodyguards would round up those chosen and kidnap them. If their families tried to keep them from Gaddafi's clutches, they were gunned down.

One teacher at a Tripoli school recalled how the girls were all very young. "Some were only 14," she said. "They would simply take the girl they wanted. They had no conscience, no morals, not an iota of mercy even though she was a mere child."

One mother, whose daughter was a student, said the community around Tripoli University lived in fear when a visit from the colonel was announced.

"The girls he wanted would be rounded up and sent to him," she said.

"One just disappeared and they never found her again, despite her father and brothers searching for her. Another was found three months later, cut, raped and lying in the middle of a park. She had been left for dead."

Even today, the Libyan people are afraid to speak openly about Gaddafi's depravity, fearing reprisals from his former henchmen.

But one woman - who was repeatedly raped by the despot over seven years from the age of 15 - has anonymously spoken of how he terrorised and abused her. She had been chosen to present the colonel with a bouquet when he toured her school in his home town of Sirte on the Mediterranean coast, 350 miles east of Tripoli.

When he patted her head afterwards, in an apparently paternal gesture, she thought she had pleased the man she and her fellow Libyans were forced to call 'the Guide'.

The next day three women dressed in military uniform arrived telling her parents she was needed to present more flowers. Instead, she was driven at high speed to Gaddafi's lair. Once there, he barked at his women soldiers: "Get her ready." The girl was stripped, given a blood test and shaved of all but her pubic hair. She was dressed in a G-string, forced into a low-cut gown and had thick make-up plastered on her face. When she was shoved into Gaddafi's room, to her horror he was lying naked on the bed. When she tried to run out, the women soldiers grabbed her and flung her back on the bed.

She was raped repeatedly during the seven years she was held captive, eventually escaping when a door was accidentally left unlocked.

Fuelled by cocaine and alcohol - and often Viagra - Gaddafi abused her horribly.

"I will never forget that first time, that moment," she says. "He violated my body and pierced my soul with a dagger. That blade will never come out."

It took the documentary-makers months of negotiations to be allowed access to information on Gaddafi as Libya remains secretive and hidebound by bureaucracy.

An interior view of the house of Aisha Gaddafi, daughter of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi. Source: AP

But they also established that Gaddafi set up a 'murder for hire' team run from Havana to rid him of enemies around the world.

In a secret interview from Cuba, former CIA agent Frank Terpil said: "I would say [it was] Murder Incorporated ... murder for hire. Gaddafi thought that anybody who was a dissident, they [should be] eliminated, he had contracts out on a bunch of people in London."

He often stored the bodies of those killed in Libya in freezers so that he could regularly view them.

If Gaddafi was power-crazed, he was also paranoid. A Brazilian plastic surgeon found himself escorted deep inside a bunker in Tripoli in the middle of the night in order to remove fat from Gaddafi's belly and inject it into his increasingly wrinkled face.

Despite the pain, Gaddafi refused a general anaesthetic, fearing he might be poisoned - and because he wished to remain alert.

Halfway through the operation, he stopped to have a hamburger. He also created an elite squad of bodyguards - all female - whom he used for sex and forced to watch multiple barbaric executions.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and a female bodyguard. Source: News Limited

For decades Gaddafi surrounded himself with these beautiful young women. Dressed in close-fitting military uniforms, with manicured nails and perfectly coiffed hair, they exuded glamour while toting guns.

But they were little more than disposable prostitutes used and abused by Gaddafi and his family.

Known as 'the Haris al-Has' - the private female guards - almost all were coerced into joining his cadre. One of them, who admits she had "once adored him", recalled the horrific treatment they had to endure.

"Early one morning, at 2am, we were taken to a closed hall," she said. "We were to witness the murder of 17 students. We were not allowed to scream. We were made to cheer and shout. To act as though delighted by this display. Inside I was crying. They shot them all, one by one."

According to Benghazi-based psychologist Seham Sergewa, who interviewed scores of the girls for the International Criminal Court, there were about 400 members of the elite squad over the years.

"A pattern emerged in their stories," she explains. "The women would first be raped by the dictator then passed on, like used objects, to one of his sons and eventually to high- ranking officials for more abuse.

"In one case a girl of 18 said she was raped in front of her father. She kept begging her distraught father to look away. Many of the victims say they contemplated suicide many times. Doubtless there were some who took their own lives."

It has also emerged that teams of boys were sent to Gaddafi's sex den, where they too were abused.

Former chief of protocol Nuri Al Mismari, who was at Gaddafi's side for 40 years, adds: "He was terribly sexually deviant. Young boys and so on. He had his own boys. They used to be called the 'services group'. All of them were boys and bodyguards ... a harem for his pleasure."

Everything you need to know about the Grammys

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 26 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Will Taylor Swift take home a gong? Picture: Getty Source: Getty Images

TAKE a look at this trivia to see how well-versed you are on this year's nominees before they hit the red carpet on Monday.

Daft Punk

From the start of writing to the end of recording, Daft Punk's smash hit "Get Lucky" took roughly 18 months to complete. Time that was definitely well spent.

All of Daft Punk's recent outfits have been designed by fellow Frenchman Hedi Slimane.

One of Daft Punk's earliest videos "Da Funk" was directed by Oscar-nominated director Spike Jonze. It was filmed in the East Village in 1995.

Lorde

Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor) wrote the lyrics to her No. 1 hit "Royals" in just half an hour.

After sending out videos of herself singing at a talent show, Lorde was signed to a development deal at the age of 13.

The New Zealander recently came face to face with David Bowie at a party where he gave the 17-year-old a ringing endorsement, and said her music felt like "listening to tomorrow." No pressure or anything, Ella.

Robin Thicke

Thicke and his wife Paula Patton have been together since they were 16 years old.

According to his dad Alan, Robin's babysitter used to be ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky was taking care of an 11-year-old Robin in 1988 when he learned he was being sold by the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings.

Around 20 universities and colleges in the United Kingdom have banned the playing of "Blurred Lines" over fears that the song's racy lyrics promote and glorify sexual assault.

Sara Bareilles

Bareilles' breakthrough hit "Brave" was co-written by fun's Jack Antonoff. Antonoff wrote the song about a friend's struggle to come out and since then, it has become a gay anthem.

As a kid, Bareilles auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club but didn't make the cut. Just think, she could have been Britney or Christina, but she's probably glad she isn't.

Before earning his Oscar nomination for playing a Quaalude dropping maniac in "The Wolf of Wall Street," Jonah Hill directed the video for Bareilles' 2011 single "Gonna Get Over You."

Bruno Mars

Despite having numerous hits and a sold out tour during 2013, Mars also had to contend with the sudden death of his mother Bernadette, who had a brain aneurism.

Bruno's song writing credits extend beyond his own work. He has also written hits for Cee Lo Green ("F**k You"), Travie McCoy ("Billionaire") and even Justin Bieber ("Love Me").

Bruno's real name is Peter Gene Hernandez, but his family nicknamed him Bruno after the wrestler Bruno Sammartino.

Kendrick Lamar

The cover of Lamar's breakthrough album "good kid, m.A.A.d city" depicts him as a baby, surrounded by two of his uncles and his grandfather.

Lamar went to Centennial High School in Compton, Calif., the same school as his mentor Dr. Dre.

Lamar also performs with the Californian rap collective Black Hippy, which includes Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Because of the hit "Same Love" (that offers support for same-sex relationships), Macklemore has been dogged by rumours about his own sexuality. The first thing that now comes up when searching Macklemore in Google is "Macklemore Gay." He actually got engaged to his long-term girlfriend last year.

Macklemore did a stint in rehab for drug and alcohol addiction in 2008.

Macklemore met his partner in crime Ryan Lewis via MySpace. Remember that?!

Justin Timberlake

Part one of "The 20/20 Experience" was the best-selling album in the United States last year, moving over 2 million copies.

As if releasing two albums in one year wasn't enough, Timberlake is also credited as a co-writer on three of the songs on Beyoncé's recently released self-titled album.

When Justin was just 11, he appeared on "Star Search" (using the name Justin Randall) wearing a cowboy hat as he covered an Alan Jackson song. And, yes, there is video of that.

Pharrell Williams

When writing "Blurred Lines," Pharrell and Robin Thicke used the groove to Marvin Gaye's 1977 No. 1 hit "Got To Give It Up" as an inspiration. They obviously stayed too close to the original as Gaye's family accused them of plagiarising. Some of the lawsuits are ongoing.

Pharrell has a son named Rocket Man. He deserves a Grammy for that alone.

One of Pharrell's first ever appearances on record was on the 1992 hit "Right Here" by SWV. You can hear him chanting the group's name throughout the song.

Taylor Swift

Swift grew up on a Christmas tree farm owned by her family. Her job was to get rid of the praying mantis pods before the trees were sold to customers.

When Swift was in the fourth grade, she won a national poetry contest for a piece she called "Monster in My Closet."

The "Red" tour was the highest grossing tour in North America last year, beating out Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, the Rolling Stones and even Beyoncé.

Australia, it's time to stop complaining

Save your protests for the issues that matter. Source: ThinkStock

OK Australia. Take your fingers off your keyboards for a moment and stop before you tweet that picture.

Enough is enough. We're sick of hearing why everything is offensive to you. We're tired of you taking to social media to bully companies into recalling thousands upon thousands of stock.

If you don't know what we're talking about, it's time to get caught up.

In short, Australia seems to have an obsession. It's not all of us, but it's always the loudest ones that get heard. And they're certainly kicking up a fuss. Recently it's been about offensive Australia Day t-shirts, burger restaurants that don't have enough vegetarian options, and cafes who post 'offensive' signs.

Half a century ago people used to take to the streets with placards and protest issues such as the war in Vietnam or women's rights. Protests like this still happen today, and that's a good thing. It shows we have a democratic society that supports free speech and tolerance of opinion.

And organised protests usually mean that people care and have thought long enough about an issue to actually get up off the couch, make a handpainted sign and join thousands of others walking through the streets so their point can be heard.

But sitting on your couch at home, tweeting how offended you are at the latest 'un-Australian' t-shirt or inappropriate remark by a news presenter, smacks of a nanny-state mentality.

Channel Seven's Samantha Armytage was in hot water after joking about her 'stripper shoes'. Source: Supplied

The problem is, we've all been told that the 'customer is always right', and that idea has grown disproportionately in our minds to justify whingeing about anything we don't like.

But while we used to just complain in writing or in person to management, now with only a few taps on our smartphone keyboard, we can tweet or Facebook our opinion to the world.

And other people who typically enjoy hopping on a bandwagon - any bandwagon really, even if they don't fully understand the issue - push the message out to their friends via other forms of social media. Soon there's a hashtag that's trending; a modern day placard if you will.

Sometimes the organisation being boycotted caves to 'popular opinion', as in the case of Aldi and Big W and their 'racially offensive' Australia Day t-shirts and Ice Designs pulling its 'sexist' t-shirts.

Things certainly got ridiculous when people started complaining about a fashion segment on Channel Seven's Sunrise, where Samantha Armytage joked about having 'stripper shoes'.

So is Australia on track to becoming a full-blown nanny-nation?

One news.com.au reader voiced their disgust by writing "Social media is where everyone complains. First world problem. Whingers!"

Another reader, commenting on the Aldi t-shirts said: "God these people need to get a life and move on. Everyone needs to stop being so 'politically correct' and oversensitive. In no way shape or form is the t-shirt racist. Racism is so overused now that I don't believe the word has any meaning anymore."

But what these companies don't realise is that social media can become a deceptive megaphone. Something may seem like a unanimous, trending issue, but is actually just a bunch of people who have nothing better to do with their time than complain about something.

To be clear, we're not suggesting that you stop being critical of what you see and hear. But if people keep whining every time something offends them, we'll be known as the nation who 'cried wolf'. And when issues that really matter surface, no one will stop to hear us.

BP caught in reply all email chaos

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 25 Januari 2014 | 14.41

A reply all email chain took hold of BP in the most hilarious way. Source: AP

IT STARTED with an ordinary, routine email. But by accidentally grouping thousands of employees as recipients, one email ended up sending oil giant BP into worldwide chaos and a reply all chain that nearly broke records.

We know how annoying a reply all chain can be in the office. But Gawker has reported that at BP this event snowballed into a day of madness.

It began with:

"Hi Shahid,

We have removed Anant Prakash from the OMS Navigator Users distribution list. Let us know if you have any concerns."

But the original sender accidentally sent it to the entire distribution list, which contained practically the whole company. But before a "please kindly ignore" email was even composed, the reply all storm began to swirl.

"I have no idea who this is and can you remove me from this email," one response said.

"Similarly I think I was added to the distribution in error"

There are always the cool-headed people in a crisis situation who call for order:

OK we have all been added in error and the guy who sent the original email has already recognised his mistake!

But asking the masses to ignore the chain was futile and only made things worse as BP workers in different timezones woke up to the enormous email chain.

OK it is ignored

Keep me in the loop please, I love this madness! :)

After more and more reply all emails flooded in with people not knowing what was going on and being asked to be removed to the list and people replying all to those request things began to get heated. And the caps lock came out:

"CAN YOU ALL STOP SELECTING 'REPLY ALL' ...... just reply to Patsy."

"PLEASE TAKE ME OFF ALL THESE REDICULOUS REPLIES!"

"CAN YOU STOP ASKING TO BE REMOVED FOR CHRIST SAKE"

"Who on earth are all you people and why are you bombarding my inbox?"

Just out of curiosity; do you have a distribution list that reads "Everyone in the world"? If so, please remove me from that list.

Thank you"

It seemed the employees then began to suffer from some sort of deliriousness after the head-spinning amount of replies:

"I missed the original email. Can you please resend it again………. THANKS………..!!!!!!!!!"

"Keep calm and

Keep replying All!!!"

"Don't stop, please, keep moving"

The chain became so long that some employees began to think it could be record-breaking:

A"s the Carpenters once sang ' Its only just begun '…….

Have just put the phone down from the Guinness people, they say another 64 replies and we have the new world record !!!

We can do this !"

Here's Anant! The man who was subject of the original email. He's now known across BP's global network. Source: LinkedIn Source: Supplied

Then finally the masses of email recipients finally heard from Anant Prakash, the mystery man who was the main subject of the original email:

To the whole BP family who have taken the time to email me today Have a wonderful weekend - I'm off to the pub.

Order has been restored.

Hawking: There are no black holes

It's a black hole, but not as we know it. Stephen Hawking's latest revelation claims what we know could be all wrong. Source: ThinkStock

PROFESSOR Stephen Hawking has shocked the scientific community by radically claiming there are no black holes.

In an article by Nature it is reported that Hawking, who is responsible for creating the theories on what we know about black holes today, has done away with notions science has held true for almost 40 years.

He claims the event horizon - an invisible boundary covering every black hole beyond which nothing, not even light can escape - do not exist.

Instead what Hawking suggests is an "apparent horizon", which temporarily traps matter and energy before releasing it into space.

Stephen Hawking has delivered theories on the universe's most mind-bending subjects and his latest work has stirred up more thought-provoking head-scratching. Source: News Limited

"There is no escape from a black hole in classical theory," Hawking told Nature. Quantum theory, however, "enables energy and information to escape from a black hole".

Now buckle up - here's where it all gets a bit confusing.

It was previously believed that should an astronaut be unlucky enough to fall into a black hole they would happily pass through the event horizon, being gradually pulled inward - stretched out along the way like spaghetti - and eventually crushed at the black hole's infinitely dense core.

However, theoretical physicist Joseph Polchinski came to the conclusion that the laws of quantum mechanics would change the situation completely, turning it into a highly energetic area that would instead burn the astronaut to a crisp. But if this was the case it could dismiss Einstein's theory of relativity. This is what's known as the blackhole firewall paradox and it's been puzzling scientists for years.

But now Hawking's third theory as to what a black hole could look like has got physicists' heads spinning. Hawking's new suggestion is that the apparent horizon is the real boundary. "The absence of event horizons means that there are no black holes - in the sense of regimes from which light can't escape to infinity," Hawking writes.

Polchinski, however, is sceptical that black holes without an event horizon could exist in nature, "the kind of violent fluctuations needed to erase it are too rare in the Universe," he says.

If you've managed to understand any of this, we applaud you. While we won't even pretend to get our own heads around it some scientists have and explain how this revelation "highlights how abhorrent physicists find the potential existence of firewalls."

Raphael Bousso, a theoretical physicist and former student of Hawking's states: "the idea that there are no points from which you cannot escape a black hole is in some ways an even more radical and problematic suggestion than the existence of firewalls," he says. "But the fact that we're still discussing such questions 40 years after Hawking's first papers on black holes and information is testament to their enormous significance."

What if Roger and Rafa had never been born?

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 24 Januari 2014 | 14.41

It's a beautiful romance ... errr, wait. Rivalry. We mean rivalry. Source: AP

ROGER Federer and Rafael Nadal have won 30 grand slam titles between them, and played one another eight times in the final of a major tournament.

Federer has won more slams than any other man in history. Nadal is third on the list, just one win behind Pete Sampras.

From 2005 to 2010, Roger and Rafa monopolised the majors, taking 21 of the 24 titles on offer.

That's all very stats-heavy. We're really just trying to say that these two have been absurdly dominant, and the tennis world would look completely different without them.

Maybe they should play doubles together? Source: AAP

About that. We've decided to have a bit of fun by rewriting history, pretending Roger and Rafa never existed. Every major title these two have claimed over the years has been re-awarded to the bloke who probably would have grabbed it if they weren't in the way.

Before you read the lovely tables we've compiled, have a squiz at our infallible methodology, which has delivered impossibly hypothetical results with flawless accuracy:

1. Pick a grand slam;

2. Did Roger or Rafa win it? If "no", you're done. If "yes", move on to step three;

3. Was Roger or Rafa the losing finalist? If "no", the runner up is your new champion. If "yes", move on to step four;

4. Look at the two losing semi-finalists. The higher-seeded player is your new champion. If neither player is seeded, the bloke with the higher world ranking at that time is your new champion;

5. Attempt to compile your data into some nice, crisp tables;

6. Smash your keyboard against the desk four times;

7. Ask someone more technologically literate for help;

8. Compile your data into some nice, crisp tables;

Speaking of the tables, here they are. We've picked out the main points of interest underneath.

THE ACTUAL RESULTS

So, what happens in this alternative universe?

• Australia picks up two more grand slam titles, with Mark Philippoussis grabbing his only major and Lleyton Hewitt taking his tally to three;

• Novak Djokovic wins 13 majors instead of six, taking him to second on the all-time list. He wins all four grand slams in 2011, in the middle of a seven-slam winning streak. That gives him the extremely rare calendar grand slam - something never achieved by Federer or Nadal. The last man to do it was Australian legend Rod Laver, in 1969;

• Andy Murray wins five majors instead of two;

• Swede Robin Soderling wins back-to-back titles at Roland Garros;

• Big-serving American Andy Roddick wins five majors instead of one;

• Not-quite-so-big-serving American Andre Agassi picks up a ninth grand slam title;

• Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis wins both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006. Really, that guy? Yeah. That guy;

• Russian Marat Safin doubles his grand slam tally, taking it to four.

Marat likes this alternative reality. Source: News Limited

When will the sex crime horror end?

A WOMAN, aged just 20 years, was accused of having a relationship with a Muslim from another Indian community.

Her punishment? She was gang-raped by 13 men on the orders of a village council in West Bengal state.

Police arrested 13 people over the attack which was meted out after the woman's parents said they could not pay the fine of 25,000 rupees (400 dollars) imposed by the council for having the affair.

The horrific case of "village justice" again highlights India's record on sexual violence.

Has anything changed? Is India taking the crisis seriously?

Affects everyone... The mother of the man accused of driving the Delhi rape bus. Picture: AP Source: AFP

Back in December 2012, the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student while riding a bus in the nation's capital, New Delhi, horrified people in India and around the world.

The woman, later given the name 'Nirbhya' (Hindi for "fearless") in the Indian media, was on her way home with a male friend after watching the film Life of Pi at a shopping mall.

The bus deviated from its normal route and the doors were sealed. Her friend was beaten and knocked unconscious.

According to her last testimony before she died of complications, the perpetrators (which included a juvenile) dragged her to the back of the bus, repeatedly raped her, struck and penetrated her with an iron rod and one even used his hands to tear at her internal organs.

That attack triggered unprecedented protests across the nation where citizens declared enough was enough.

The attacks continue

There have been several gruesome attacks on women over the past year and the number of reported sex crimes in the nation continues to rise.

In Kolkata, a 16-year-old was gang-raped last year in two separate attacks. The second rape occurred after she was returning home from reporting the first attack. She died on New Year's Eve after she was set alight on December 23.

Earlier this month, a Danish woman was allegedly gang-raped and robbed in the capital New Delhi after she became lost on her way back to her hotel. Six men were arrested over that attack.

India remains a deeply patriarchal society. "Men have traditionally exerted power over women," said Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt, a senior fellow at the Australian National University, who wrote a blog post about her own experiences in India after the 2012 gang-rape.

"Riding a bus in New Delhi was always intimidating," she wrote. "I still remember how, in the early 1990s, a largish, unknown man just flopped on my lap in the aisle seat."

When she objected to what was happening, she said, "his demeanour switched between menacing and casual, forcing me to shut up and leave him the seat."

That was far from an isolated incident, she said.

Acting out ... An Indian woman marches for action. Picture: Getty Images Source: AFP

"It occurred in a country where there are 150 million missing women (due to sons being preferred over women at birth) and where a girl was killed by her parents for falling in love with a lower-class man, to single out two incidents of many.

"Add these examples to the innumerable unrecorded incidents of violence that occur every day, and it is clear that modern, independent India is failing."

Widespread anger

Political change has been in the air over the past year. As CNN's Delhi correspondent Sumnima Udas put it: "No one expected it to become so big ... The government was shaken to its core".

Indian men demand a harsher punishment for the accused in the Delhi rape case. Picture: EPA Source: Supplied

"The most heartening thing about this sordid episode (the rape of Nirbhya in Delhi) was the presence of men in protests against rape," Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt wrote. "The word 'feminist' was no longer a derogatory term, and men were able to 'come out' in support of women."

In March 2013, the Indian Parliament passed a slate of legislation to combat the sexual assault crisis. Major changes were made to the country's criminal code.

Stalking, lower level sexual harassment, acid attacks and voyeurism became criminal offences.

Prison terms for rape were doubled and the death penalty was authorised as punishment for repeat offenders, or for criminals who left their victims dead or in a persistent vegetative state.

Even this Indian schoolgirl was in favour of the death penalty for rapists. Picture: AFP Source: AFP

"This is now at the centre of the political debate," said Danielle Rajandram, research associate at the Lowy Institute, adding there is a significant way to go for laws to protect women against sexual violence and rape.

But while the focus has been on protecting women, Lahiri-Dutt said the real change that needs to happen is of attitudes at the family level.

"We have been talking a long time about Indian women," she said. "We really need to stop that. We really need to go into the families and see where this violence are being generated."

"That's where families come in. That's where (men) are socialised into gender (roles)."

Yet, another family is still suffering after the tribal council gang rape. The victim's mother said the attackers originally warned the family against going to police, and initially stopped them from taking her to hospital.

"The crime was committed by our own people," she told reporters, as her daughter recovers in hospital. "They tortured my daughter and dumped her home."

$714.30 per minute? Quit complaining, Tomic

BERNARD Tomic played for just 42 minutes in his first round Australian Open match against world number one Rafael Nadal, before bowing out after one set (6-4) with an injury.

He copped a bucketload of criticism from both punters and Australian tennis greats for being a slacker and not having the fight to push through the pain.

After it was revealed that Tomic is suffering from a longstanding hip injury and will be sidelined for up to three months following surgery, the anger dissolved into sympathy and disappointment.

But spare Tomic too much pity, because he certainly didn't walk away from this year's Open empty-handed.

He received $30,000 in prize money for playing just that one set. That equates to $714.30 per minute of play. Yep, we too had to pick our jaws off the floor.

Tomic waves to the crowd after retirement in his men's singles match against Rafael Nadal on day two of the Australian Open. Picture: AFP Source: News Limited

When Aussie Casey Dellacqua lost her fourth round match to 19-year-old Canadian up-and-comer Eugenie Bouchard, we all felt for her. But her $135,000 consolation prize (the amount awarded to fourth-round losers) should help to ease the pain.

How about Nick Kyrgios (second round loser)? $50,000. Sam Stosur (third round loser)? $75,000.

And despite his controversial loss to Roger Federer last night, Andy Murray will still take home $270,000.

The money is a recognition of the players' huge achievements - qualifying for a grand slam is no mean feat. It's also to assist with the significant financial costs associated with being an elite athlete.

WHAT TENNIS STARS ARE REALLY RAKING IN THIS YEAR

The prize money awarded to the male and female single's players at the Australian Open has increased by up to 33 per cent in two years, according to the table of figures provided by tournament organisers.

The winnings for the first and second round losers have increased by a third since 2012. The percentage increase gets smaller the further a player progresses in the tournament.

The winners of the men's and women's singles final will each pocket a cool $2,650,000. The runners-up will collect $1,325,000. That's an increase of 13.2 per cent ($350,000) and 8.9 per cent ($175,000), respectively.

Last year's Australian Open winner, Novak Djokovic, with the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. Picture: Getty Source: Getty Images

The Australian Open winnings are on par with those of the three other grand slam tournaments.

In 2013, Wimbledon winners received $US2,437,600, US Open victors won $US2,600,000 and the French Open champions took home Euro1,500,000 (US$2,032,200).

Second round losers at last year's Wimbeldon received $57,893. That's a whopping 64 per cent increase since 2012.

So when Tomic addressed the media after his loss to Nadal with a forlorn expression and a heavy heart, he may not have been mourning just for his pride and his sporting career. He also lost out on the chance to win millions of dollars in prize money.

Compression gear: Waste of money?

The SKINS Cheat Legal commercial from 2010. Courtesy: SKINS

To compress or not to compress? Even the Haws are divided. Source: News Limited

COMPRESSION gear has taken over the world of exercise so comprehensively that you can't toss a barbell at the gym without hitting someone in a pair of Skins.

Professional athletes led the skin-tight charge, and now everyone from pram-pushing parents to muscled-up bodybuilders has fallen into step.

The garments are big on two things: Promises and prices.

A set of 2XU compression shorts, for example, will set you back $85. Their long-legged counterpart is all yours for $140.

And for that hefty coin, you get "high performance bottoms ... engineered to enhance your performance like never before".

But do these pants really deliver what you pay for? The answer is simple: Yeah, kinda.

Not only for the pros anymore, compression gear is a part of many wardrobes. Source: News Limited

Our mates over at AskMen swear by them. As part of their AM Fitness Lab series, today they've anointed compression gear as a crucial component of getting fit.

But the nation's consumer watchdog, Choice , has found that you can't really trust the science that's printed on the box.

Choice says that Skins and co. could increase your blood flow, reduce muscle vibration, increase proprioception (this is your awareness of your joints in space), and make you more aerodynamic. They could also prevent or reduce injury and accelerate recovery.

All of these things, in theory, might improve your performance.

In practice, however, Choice says most studies have found that the theories behind compression garments don't necessarily translate to better performance.

Does this mean you should go back to bare legs? Not necessarily. Read on. Source: News Limited

"The rationale for wearing compression garments is solid, but the evidence is weak," Choice says.

"For the average fun-runner and keen amateur sportsperson, there are probably more effective ways of improving performance, preventing injury and enhancing recovery than wearing compression garments."

But that doesn't mean they're a waste of money. Choice concludes that if they feel great, you should keep wearing them. It might be all in your head, but that's not such a bad thing.

"Anecdotally, many people who try them find they provide a performance boost and that they feel better afterwards. So if you think it works, it does work.

"Given that there's no evidence of any negative effects, if they feel good and put you in a sporting frame of mind, go for it!"

Arnie's cheeky stunt undercover

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 22 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Arnie goes undercover at Gold's Gym as 'Howard Kleiner' to teach the locals a thing or two about pumping iron.

FAMOUS for his bodybuilding career, Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in the gym - but this time he went undercover for a good cause.

The Hollywood movie star and former governor of California dressed in a disguise, posing as a man known as Howard Kleiner at Gold's Gym in Venice, California.

The reason? To promote and raise funds for After-School All-Stars, a nationwide program that provides free mentorship, homework help, tutoring and fun activities to students from low-income families.

In a video promoting the stunt, Schwarzenegger is seen getting in his disguise, which includes a wig, moustache and baseball cap.

He then walks around the gym, talking to members about their training and he gives them tips on their training.

"We are doing crazy stuff ... for something serious," he said.

He is even seen wiping the brow of a man in the gym, before he talks to a woman who almost guesses his identity.

Cheeky stunt ... Arnie is back, promoting health and fitness. Picture: Still from YouTube Source: Supplied

"I feel like I know you or something," she said.

In classic, one-liner Schwarzenegger-style does not hold back, he gives members his honest opinions.

When he sees one woman doing sit-ups, he tell her: "You have elbows and knees, so touch them."

To another member he says: "Stop being a baby. This is Gold's gym it's not a baby gym."

Donors who give at least $10 to the organisation through omaze.com will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to Los Angeles, where they'll ride with Schwarzenegger in his personal Sherman Tank while smoking cigars.

The lucky winners will also get to "crush things together" and work out on the tank. To sweeten the deal, Schwarzenegger will match every dollar donated.

Schwarzenegger has been passionate about after-school programs for decades.

Kiis FM accused of stealing listeners

Radio shakes up as Sydney's most popular FM DJs, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, debut their new show on KIIS after 13 years with market leader 2DAY.

Kyle and Jackie O have found a new home on Kiis FM. Source: Supplied

THE radio war between Kyle and Jackie O and their former station 2Day FM is getting ugly, and now some listeners are caught in the middle.

Kyle and Jackie O walked out on Sydney's 2Day FM late last year and returned to the airwaves this week on a new station, Kiis FM.

KYLE CALLS MEL B A LIAR

Some loyal 2Day FM fans have allegedly been receiving calls from Kiis FM this week asking them to take part in Kyle and Jackie O's new show.

But a Kiis FM spokesman said neither member of the duo has access to contact details for 2Day fans.

Those fans, who are confused about how the Kiis FM producers got their phone numbers, have been venting their frustration on a private Facebook page called 2Day FM Super VIPs, which has been viewed by news.com.au.

Mel B, Merrick Watts, Sophie Monk and Jules Lund are the 2Day FM breakfast crew. Source: Supplied

"I just got my seventh phone call in three days from Kiis FM," wrote one 2Day FM fan.

"I asked him (the producer) how he got my number. He said, 'oh from you ringing the Kyle and Jackie O show before'. I then told him, 'but I've never called Kiis FM', and he said, 'oh no from when Kyle and Jackie O were on 2Day FM'. Then he panicked and said, 'oh sorry mate I've got to go', and he hung up on me."

2DAY SURPRISINGLY PROMOTES KISS FM FACEBOOK PAGE

Several other fans claim to have had similar experiences.

"I have been getting calls (from Kiis FM) every morning at 6am and every second afternoon around 3-5pm," said a different woman.

"Although they offer me (to play) competitions I say no."

But in response to the allegations, an ARN spokesman has denied to news.com.au that Kyle and Jackie O have been targeting the loyal 2Day FM fans.

Kyle and Jackie O have launched their new show on Kiis FM. Source: Supplied

"Kiis 1065 don't have access to any 2Day VIP Facebook list," the spokesman said.

"Kyle & Jackie O's show takes up to 1000 calls each morning from passionate listeners and we keep some of those callers' details to reward the big fans who want to keep communicating with Kyle & Jackie on air. In just three days on air at Kiis 1065, the huge response from Kyle & Jackie O fans on both social media and callers to the show are a combination of existing and new fans."

Kyle and Jackie O were the number one rated FM show when they were on 2Day FM, but we don't yet know if the majority of their fans have chosen to stay loyal to their show or their old station.

We'll find out when the first radio ratings for the year are released on March 11.

The moment woman plunged from cruise ship

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 21 Januari 2014 | 14.41

The moment Sarah Kirby fell from a cruise ship. Picture: ABC News Source: Supplied

THE terrifying moment a drunk woman fell seven stories during a Caribbean cruise has been caught on camera.

Sarah Kirby, 31, has spoken about the ordeal, which saw her floating in the ocean for nearly two hours before being rescued.

Kirby had consumed "a few drinks", including Long Island Teas, while on the five-night cruise with her fiance and a friend in October 2012 and became "extremely intoxicated".

In a lawsuit against Carnival Cruises, she claims that a barman "pushed" alcohol on her by giving the group free $5 tokens the more they consumed.

Kirby lost her grip on the balcony, slipped and fell 30 metres overboard, hitting a life raft on the way down. The horrifying fall was recorded by a camera on the deck of the ship.

"I remember leaning over the balcony to look at the side of the ship and next thing I knew I was in the water. Pure terror," Kirby told ABC News.

"I just prayed to God over and over please don't let me die out here."

Sarah Kirby. Picture: ABC News Source: Supplied

Suing for negligence and emotional distress, she claims the crew of the Carnival Destiny failed to rescue her in a timely manner and did not treat her injuries properly, the US Courthouse News Service reported.

The crew allegedly refused to turn the boat around to rescue her until they'd spent 90 minutes searching the ship. That's despite witnesses reporting her going overboard.

According to the lawsuit: "The plaintiff fell in the water without a life jacket or a life preserver. After a few minutes, the cruise ship sped away, until it disappeared in the horizon, leaving the plaintiff alone in the middle of the ocean".

Kirby swam till she was exhausted, floated and coughed up water from waves that "would crash into her face, believing that her death was imminent" from drowning or sharks.

She said she had to wait 16 hours before she received medical treatment.

Kirby stayed in hospital for three weeks suffering severe injuries including broken bones, lung contusions, hypothermia, heart arrhythmia and blood clots in her eyes, arms, and legs.

Carnival Cruises has denied the allegations, telling ABC the claims "are completely unsupported and contradicted by the evidence in the case".

news.com.au has contacted the cruise line for further comment.

Detainee stuck in North Korea pleads for help

American missionary Kenneth Bae arrives to speak to reporters at Pyongyang Friendship Hospital in Pyongyang Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. Bae, 45, who has been jailed in North Korea for more than a year, appealed for the U.S. to do its best to secure his release. Source: AP

AN AMERICAN missionary who has been jailed in North Korea for more than a year appeared before reporters and appealed to the US government to do its best to secure his release.

The missionary, Kenneth Bae, made the comments at what he called a press conference held at his own request. He was under guard during the appearance. It is not unusual for prisoners in North Korea to say after their release that they spoke in similar situations under duress.

Wearing a grey cap and inmate's uniform with the number 103 on his chest, Bae spoke in Korean during the brief appearance, which was attended by The Associated Press and a few other foreign media in Pyongyang.

In response, the United States is reportedly considering sending an envoy to the communist country to secure Bae's release.

An anonymous US official told Reuters: "We hope this decision by DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) authorities to allow Kenneth Bae to meet with reporters signals their willingness to release him.

"We have offered to send Ambassador King to Pyongyang to secure Mr. Bae's release. We have asked the North Koreans this, and await their early response."

Bae, the longest-serving American detainee in North Korea in recent years, expressed hope that the U.S. government will do its best to win his release. He said he had not been treated badly in confinement.

"I believe that my problem can be solved by close cooperation and agreement between the American government and the government of this country," he said.

Modal Trigger

Bae said he wants to be freed and to return to his family as soon as possible. Source: AP

Bae was arrested in November 2012 while leading a tour group and accused of crimes against the state before being sentenced to 15 years of hard labour. He was moved to a hospital last summer in poor health.

He made an apology Monday and said he had committed anti-government acts.

Bae said a comment last month by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden had made his situation more difficult.

"The vice president of United States said that I was detained here without any reason," Bae said. "And even my younger sister recently told the press that I had not committed any crime and I know that the media reported it.

"I think these comments infuriated the people here enormously. And for this reason, I am in a difficult situation now. As a result, although I was in medical treatment in the hospital for five months until now, it seems I should return to prison. And moreover there is greater difficulty in discussions about my amnesty."

Bae's appearance came weeks after North Korea freed an elderly American veteran of the Korean War who had been held for weeks for alleged crimes during the 1950-53 conflict.

State media said 85-year-old Merrill Newman was released because he apologised for his wrongdoing and that authorities also considered his age and medical condition. Newman said after his release that a videotaped confession was made under duress, although he was generally treated well.

North Korea has detained at least seven Americans since 2009. They were eventually deported or released without serving out their terms, some after prominent Americans such as former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter travelled to Pyongyang.

A senior U.S. envoy had planned to visit North Korea in late August to discuss Bae's release, but Pyongyang withdrew its invitation at the last minute, accusing the United States of hostility. Analysts said North Korea was apparently trying to gain leverage in a long-running international standoff over its nuclear weapons program.

"We shouldn't take Kenneth Bae's comments merely as his own," said Kim Jin Moo, a North Korea expert at the South Korean state-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul. "The reason why North Korea had Kenneth Bae make this statement … is that they want Washington to reach out to them."

"Bae's comments are an appeal to Washington to actively persuade Pyongyang to release him," Kim said.

Other foreign analysts say North Korea wants better ties with Seoul and Washington as a way to win foreign aid and investment to boost its struggling economy.

Bae's detention was in the news earlier this month after former basketball star Dennis Rodman travelled to Pyongyang with other retired NBA players for an exhibition game marking the birthday of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In an interview with CNN while in Pyongyang, Rodman made comments implying Bae was at fault.

Rodman, who has been criticised for not using his ties with Kim to help secure Bae's freedom, later apologised.

Bae was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States in 1985 with his parents and sister. He was allowed to call home on Dec. 29 because of the holidays, according to his sister, Terri Chung. That was the first time his three children from an earlier marriage had spoken to him, she said. He has two children in Arizona and another in Hawaii, ages 17, 22 and 23, Chung said.

Before his arrest, Bae lived in China for seven years with his wife and stepdaughter. He ran a tour business and led 18 trips to North Korea, Chung said.

Kyle blows up: 'Mel B is a liar'

Written By Unknown on Senin, 20 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Radio shakes up as Sydney's most popular FM DJs, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, debut their new show on KIIS after 13 years with market leader 2DAY.

Kyle Sandilands thinks Mel B is a liar. Source: News Limited

KYLE Sandilands might be about to discover just how Scary Mel B really is after he labelled the Spice Girl a liar.

The feud between the two began in early January when Sandilands told the Daily Telegraph that Mel B isn't going to stick around for very long as a host on the new 2Day FM breakfast show.

"I know that already for a fact, she's only there for three months," Sandilands said.

But in an interview with news.com.au on January 13, Brown denied she's a short term member of the show, saying, "I'm definitely on it longer than three months."

"She's lying," Sandilands said to news.com.au today.

"She is on a three month deal. Whether they extend that or not, I don't know. Whether she'll want to do breakfast radio on a low rating station in Sydney while she's touring America doing America's Got Talent in Michigan I doubt very much."

Kyle's latest comments came just hours after he and long term sidekick Jackie O launched their new breakfast show on Sydney's recently created Kiis FM this morning, after spectacularly walking on out 2Day FM late last year.

And he's certain that his old Southern Cross Austereo bosses will be more than a little concerned after hearing him back on air today.

"They would have been crying," Sandilands said.

"They would have thought, 'We had them and we let them go!' And I give them the big finger and say 'F*** you'."

Their first show on Kiis FM went relatively smoothly apart from a minor slip of the tongue when Sandilands told the audience they were listening to 2Day FM.

"I didn't even realise I'd said it," Sandilands said.

"I had to come back on air afterwards. I'd already taken my headphones off and was relaxing."

When Sandilands and Jackie O left 2Day FM, (to be replaced by Merrick Watts, Jules Lund, Sophie Monk and Mel B) they were the number one FM breakfast show in Sydney, but it remains to be seen whether the audience will also make the switch to Kiis FM with them.

"I would expect to be number one FM very quickly," Sandilands said to news.com.au.

We'll find out on March 11 when the first radio ratings for the year are released.

Thwack! Why this ball boy is a legend

Being a ball boy at the Australian Open is a dream for many juniors, but it can have it's bad side too as this kid found out.

STOP the Australian Open. We're ready to crown a champion.

Yesterday, one of the Open's ball kids faced off against a missile from the racquet of German player Florian Mayer.

Mayer miscued a return and it flew towards the ball boy, who was standing alongside the umpire's chair, facing the court.

There was no time to react. Before the poor kid could even put a shocked expression on his face, the ball smacked right into ... well, his face. THWACK.

The impact made the boy snap his head backwards with more force than a Roger Federer forehand.

On the face of it, the boy had every right to collapse facedown in a screaming heap and subsequently retire from the match, citing his desire to be fit for the Davis Cup . Or something.

We would have taken the reasoning behind such a withdrawal at face value.

But this ball boy was made of sterner stuff than that. Apparently eager to save face, he immediately returned to his stance, hands behind his back, acting as though nothing had happened.

What poise. What class. Such stoicism in the face of extreme pain - it's the most impressive thing we've seen from a ball kid since this happened two years ago:

Face it. This ball boy's grit beats anything we saw from the army of Australian tennis players at the Open this year.

The blow to his face probably stung quite a lot, but at least he wasn't kicked in the guts by a bratty football star like this poor sod:

We don't know how Eden Hazard looks at his own face in the mirror every morning.

Putin: Gay people must 'leave kids alone'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 19 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Russian President Vladimir Putin meets upcoming Olympic Games' volunteers in Sochi. Source: AFP

RUSSIAN president, Vladimir Putin yesterday said that gay people have nothing to worry about in Sochi, as long as they "leave children alone".

Really?

Putin was wishing volunteers of the Olympics the best of luck for the games when one of them asked the president about Russia's views towards gay athletes. Putin responded with what he believed was a reassuring answer for athletes and visitors to the Olympics.

"One can feel calm and at ease," he said. "Just leave kids alone, please."

The way Putin phrased his answer - in a manner that implies gay people might prey on children while in Russia - isn't exactly the guarantee the rest of the world wanted to hear before the games.

Gay rights have been a big issue in Russia since a law passed last year that prohibited "propaganda of non-traditional sexual practices" among minors. The law was meant to stop those younger than 18 from hearing or reading about homosexuality, with teachers being told to ignore the subject, isolating gay teenagers.

"Putin's promise that gay and lesbian Olympians and spectators will be safe in Sochi is meant to distract from his country's oppression of its LGBT citizens," said Andrew Miller, a member of the gay rights group, Queer Nation.

"That gays are dangerous to children is an obvious lie meant to justify his violation of the human rights of gay men and women. We are not fooled, and neither is the world."

While finishing the Q & A with volunteers, one asked the Russian President:

"Why do Russia's Olympic uniforms contain the colours of the rainbow, the rainbow being a symbol of gay rights?"

"I didn't design the uniform," said Putin.

Is this the best celebrity photobomb ever?

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 18 Januari 2014 | 14.41

Who is the mystery woman in the background? Photo: Instagram Source: Supplied

RYAN Phillippe is the victim in one of the best celebrity photobombs ever.

The actor went for a walk in West Hollywood a couple of days ago and did his best to look cool in front the of paparrazi.

But unbeknowst to him, a woman in the background took it upon herself to make the picture a little "sassier".

39-year-old Phillippe posted the photo on his Instagram with the caption, "Got papped w/ @bwash & that lady."

But it turns out 'that lady' just happens to be Sarah Hudson, a singer who has Goldie Hawn and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler as godparents and who is first cousins with actor Kate Hudson.

It's great to see a bit of harmless Hollywood fun ... it's not as if Hudson didn't have 'cruel intentions'.

The Aussie company bigwigs are fighting over

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 17 Januari 2014 | 14.41

John Durie from The Australian discusses the latest business developments surrounding Warrnambool Cheese Butter.

The takeover bidding war for Warrnambool Cheese and Butter is almost over with Bega selling its stake to Saputo. Picture: AP. Source: AP

IT'S a company with an almost unpronouncable name you had never heard of until four months ago. But there's been a pitched takeover battle for control of 125-year old Australian company Warrnambool Cheese and Butter (WCB) with suitors wooing the dairy producer with wads of cash. Forget about mining, it's all about milk. Now is the time to trade in those magic beans for some cows.

WCB's shareholders are raking it in while major companies climb over each other to get a piece of the business. Its share price has more than doubled from $4.51 to $9.40 in that short time.

The latest salvo from dairy giant Saputo yesterday has put the momentum firmly behind the Canadian company, leaving rival Victorian farmers' co-op Murray Goulburn in a tenuous position. Fellow Aussie producer Bega, which started the bidding war in September but dropped out in December, sold its 18.8 per cent share of WCB to Saputo, which gives the Canadian firm more than 45 per cent share in the business. Saputo is offering more than $500 million for WCB. Japanese-controlled Lion also threw its hat in the ring at one point, paying more than $50 million for a 10 per cent stake.

But why are the rivers of gold flowing with milk? Like so many things, it has to do with China. China is the world's largest importer of dairy products with demand set to skyrocket to meet demands from its billion-plus consumers increasingly adopting a 'Westernised' diet. China's reliance on imported dairy products has grown between 20 and 30 per cent in the past two years, according to a Rabobank report, and is tipped to meet 20 per cent of its milk demand from overseas sources.

Our friends over the ditch in New Zealand have been milking this Chinese appetite with Kiwi dairy behemoth Fonterra already set up with its own farms and 400-person operation in China. A Wall Street Journal report said dairy accounted for 25% of NZ's $NZD47 billion export industry. Fonterra controls 90 per cent of NZ's dairy production.

Which is why WCB is such a prime target for takeover, especially for Saputo which has said continued growth in its home country of Canada was being hampered by regulation such as production caps. WCB is also a shiny and profitable prospect because of its underperformance compared to market opportunities, which would give its new owners prospects to improve on that bottom line.

So after four months, this extraordinary takeover war is almost over. Murray Goulburn has few avenues left and its offer is still subject to approval from the Australian Competition Tribunal whose decision is scheduled for 28 February. The WCB board and managing director David Lord have long publicly endorsed Saputo, which has said it would leave the current WCB management team in place.

Lord said it hoped Murray Goulburn would get on board with the Saputo offer. He said: "We would be very disappointed if all WCB shareholders didn't take advantage of what is a significant price premium compared to our share price when this process started."

Lord added the WCB board believe the Saputo offer of $9.50 a share is the "superior offer". Saputo's offer closes on 22 January.

Stay tuned.
