A WOMAN is fighting for her life after being trapped for more than two hours under a bus in Sydney CBD.

The woman was hit by the bus and dragged for several metres in Sydney's inner city, leaving her pinned by her legs, according to witnesses.

A rescue operation is under way on Erskine and Clarence St after the incident this afternoon near Wynyard station.

She was finally retrieved from under the bus at around 5.50pm, and is believed to have been taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Witnesses said they saw the woman - believed to be in her 30s and 40s - trapped, and tried to help her until emergency services arrived.

Traffic delays are spread across the city, with traffic at gridlock and the northbound roads out of Darling Harbour building quickly.

Helicopter footage showed kilometres of buses queuing to get out of the city.

"The bus driver was not injured and will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing," the police statement said.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the woman was in a critical condition.

CHARGES DROPPED ON 'TRAIN RAPE' CASE

Witness Reginald Putty was working nearby when he heard the police sirens and saw the woman trapped under the bus.

"The police rocked up and shut the street down. You could see her trapped under the bus,"he said.

"People were running around trying to help. They did a good job."

Thura Aung said he saw the woman under the bus moments after the impact with severe injuries.

"There were some kind of body parts. I didn't want to look," he said.

"She was wearing sports shoes and a track suit. It's not good. It doesn't look good."

It's understood a emergency helicopter is on standby at Barangaroo to take the woman to hospital.

Several fire fighters are still at the scene working under the bus to free the woman.

She is believed to have life-threatening injuries.
