RUSSIAN president, Vladimir Putin yesterday said that gay people have nothing to worry about in Sochi, as long as they "leave children alone".
Really?
Putin was wishing volunteers of the Olympics the best of luck for the games when one of them asked the president about Russia's views towards gay athletes. Putin responded with what he believed was a reassuring answer for athletes and visitors to the Olympics.
"One can feel calm and at ease," he said. "Just leave kids alone, please."
The way Putin phrased his answer - in a manner that implies gay people might prey on children while in Russia - isn't exactly the guarantee the rest of the world wanted to hear before the games.
Gay rights have been a big issue in Russia since a law passed last year that prohibited "propaganda of non-traditional sexual practices" among minors. The law was meant to stop those younger than 18 from hearing or reading about homosexuality, with teachers being told to ignore the subject, isolating gay teenagers.
"Putin's promise that gay and lesbian Olympians and spectators will be safe in Sochi is meant to distract from his country's oppression of its LGBT citizens," said Andrew Miller, a member of the gay rights group, Queer Nation.
"That gays are dangerous to children is an obvious lie meant to justify his violation of the human rights of gay men and women. We are not fooled, and neither is the world."
While finishing the Q & A with volunteers, one asked the Russian President:
"Why do Russia's Olympic uniforms contain the colours of the rainbow, the rainbow being a symbol of gay rights?"
"I didn't design the uniform," said Putin.
