THE terrifying moment a drunk woman fell seven stories during a Caribbean cruise has been caught on camera.

Sarah Kirby, 31, has spoken about the ordeal, which saw her floating in the ocean for nearly two hours before being rescued.

Kirby had consumed "a few drinks", including Long Island Teas, while on the five-night cruise with her fiance and a friend in October 2012 and became "extremely intoxicated".

In a lawsuit against Carnival Cruises, she claims that a barman "pushed" alcohol on her by giving the group free $5 tokens the more they consumed.

Kirby lost her grip on the balcony, slipped and fell 30 metres overboard, hitting a life raft on the way down. The horrifying fall was recorded by a camera on the deck of the ship.

"I remember leaning over the balcony to look at the side of the ship and next thing I knew I was in the water. Pure terror," Kirby told ABC News.

"I just prayed to God over and over please don't let me die out here."

Suing for negligence and emotional distress, she claims the crew of the Carnival Destiny failed to rescue her in a timely manner and did not treat her injuries properly, the US Courthouse News Service reported.

The crew allegedly refused to turn the boat around to rescue her until they'd spent 90 minutes searching the ship. That's despite witnesses reporting her going overboard.

According to the lawsuit: "The plaintiff fell in the water without a life jacket or a life preserver. After a few minutes, the cruise ship sped away, until it disappeared in the horizon, leaving the plaintiff alone in the middle of the ocean".

Kirby swam till she was exhausted, floated and coughed up water from waves that "would crash into her face, believing that her death was imminent" from drowning or sharks.

She said she had to wait 16 hours before she received medical treatment.

Kirby stayed in hospital for three weeks suffering severe injuries including broken bones, lung contusions, hypothermia, heart arrhythmia and blood clots in her eyes, arms, and legs.

Carnival Cruises has denied the allegations, telling ABC the claims "are completely unsupported and contradicted by the evidence in the case".
