HONEY maid have been clever little cookies.
The old-fashioned brand of American graham crackers, has reacted to hateful comments from its latest "This Is Wholesome" campaign with a clever and heartwarming video.
The advertisement that aired in March depicted same-sex couples with the tag line "No matter how things change — what makes us wholesome — never will," the ad says. "Everyday wholesome snacks for every wholesome family."
But the campaign was hit with homophobic backlash and drew criticism from conservative groups including One Million Moms — a division of the American Family Association that promotes fundamentalist Christian values.
Honey Maid knew the campaign would create controversy and responded by hiring artists to create a video that would "take the negative comments and turn them something else."
Printouts of the hateful comments are seen being rolled into tubes and assembled to spell out the word 'Love'.
The video ends saying "But the best part was all the positive messages we received. Over ten times as many."
Emails with the words "family is family" and "love the Honey Maid ad" and "this story of a beautiful family" and "most beautiful thing" are shown.
Turning hatred into love, the video garnered more than 1.5 million views in its first day online.
