ENGLAND will need to produce the highest run chase in World Cup history to chase down Australia's mammoth total of 9-342 at the MCG.

But it could have been worse.

Ireland, of all countries, holds the current record of 7/329 chasing down England in the 2011 World Cup in Bangalore.

An Aaron Finch century set up the innings, before Glenn Maxwell's late onslaught (66 off 40 balls) put the Aussies firmly in the box seat.

PUBLIC enemy No. 1 Stuart Broad has picked up the crucial wicket of David Warner (22 off 18 balls), and followed it up with the dismissal of Shane Watson for a golden duck the very next ball.

2.05pm — ENGLAND WINS TOSS, BOWLS FIRST

ENGLAND captain Eoin Morgan has taken an early risk, winning the toss and electing to bowl in sunny conditions at the MCG.

Former Australian wicketkeeper and Channel 9 commentator Ian Healy described Morgan's decision as a "bit puzzling".

"The English bowlers are under pressure. They need early wickets for sure," Healy said.
