SEARGENT Albert Marle asked a flight attendant if she would hang up his coat on a four-hour flight.

But Marle was travelling coach on the flight from Portland to Charlotte, and the closet was for first class passengers, US Airways said.

"If the space is available, our crew will allow you to use," the airline said in a tweet meant to explain its closet policy, TV station WSOC reported.

But that's not what the flight attendant told Marle, passengers said. Instead, she simply said: "Our airline policy says I'm not going to do it, so I'm not going to do it," recounted first-class passenger Brian Kirby.

"I was really appalled at not only the way she looked at him but the way she spoke to him in an angry type of attitude," Kirby said.

Another passenger, Jon Dahlberg, took the jacket, which was lined with medals, and hung it up behind his own seat.

"I walked back up and hung the jacket simply behind my seat. There's a difference between policy and doing what is right," he said.

The refusal sparked an outcry. Picture: Aero Icarus Source: Flickr

Marle did not raise a fuss, and did not comment to reporters. But others on the plane complained on social media.

"We hold all those serving our country in the highest regard and apologise for any offence caused," the airline said Friday in another tweet. It said it is reviewing the incident.
