GLENN Maxwell has opened up about the heartache he endured after Phillip Hughes' death, which he says was made more difficult because he shares a house with Hughes' best mate, Aaron Finch.

In a revealing interview with cricket.com.au's Sam Ferris, Maxwell discusses the torment of the past two months, which started with him losing his place in the Test side.

"It's been a weird season," Maxwell said.

"To go in and out of random formats, and in and out of teams, it's been pretty tough after what's happened with Hughesy.

"You combine that with everything else that was going on, it was probably the worst two months of my life right there, and that (Hughes' passing) was the icing on the cake."

Maxwell shares a house in Melbourne with fellow Aussie cricketer Finch and said it was a hard place to live after Hughes died in November.

"Living with Finchy probably didn't help either," Maxwell said.

"He was obviously best mates with him (and) we went through different stages of grieving at different times.

"The first week he didn't want to talk about it and I sort of did. That didn't really sit well with either of us.

"Then the second week I didn't want to talk about it and he did. We were on different paths the whole time.

"I really struggled to deal with that."

Maxwell, who is one of the most talented hitters in Australian cricket but has struggled with consistency, says Hughes continues to be in his thoughts.

"I had a dream about him the other night and woke up really emotional," he said.

"I keep having random moments of weakness where I just lose it because I start thinking about him."

Maxwell also discusses his lack of opportunity in the longer form of the game since scoring 544 runs in last year's Sheffield Shield.
