A STATE memorial service for cricketer Phillip Hughes, which was meant to be held in Sydney has now been called off.

The 25-year-old batsman died two weeks ago after he was struck in the head by a cricket ball during a Sheffield Shield match.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said the planned state funeral was called off following consultation with Cricket Australia and the Hughes family.

A short ceremony will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground before the start of the fourth Test between Australia and India.

Mr Baird said that there was no need for the memorial service after Hughes' funeral in his home town of Macksville.

"Last Wednesday's funeral in Macksville was a wonderful service and a fitting tribute to Phillip's life," he said.

"It was a privilege to be a part of it. It was a community event attended by thousands of people, watched live by millions of Australians and observed at a number of grounds around the country, including the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"We consulted with the family and with Cricket Australia, and all parties felt that given the enormous outpouring of support at last Wednesday's funeral, that a state memorial service would no longer need to be held."
