Would the real Freya Newman please stand up?

FREYA Newman was trending on Twitter in Australia and briefly centre stage in a Down Under political drama. The only problem was it was the wrong Freya Newman.

Ms Newman, from Somerset, England knew nothing about Freya Newman, the Australian 21-year-old, who today faced the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney.

The Aussie Ms Newman has pleaded guilty to leaking restricted data that revealed Frances Abbott had been awarded a $60,000 scholarship to study at the exclusive Whitehouse Institute of Design.

But while she was in court it was the Ms Newman in England who was getting the attention on social media.

Confused? Many were, none more so than the British Freya Newman who suddenly discovered who Frances Abbott was.

She was flooded with messages from well intentioned people offering support, and even to attend the next court hearing.

The British Ms Newman tweeted: "Such nice supportive messages from strangers on Facebook".
