IT SOUNDED like a reality TV love triangle you couldn't possibly have orchestrated if you tried.
The Bachelor proposes to final girl, girl says yes, Bachelor changes mind, dumps new fiancee, admits he made a mistake, tries to rekindle with runner-up six weeks later.
Only it's happened before.
The Blake-Sam-Louise love story has shocked, captivated and outraged Australian fans for the past two-and-a-half weeks, but in 2009, an American Bachelor did exactly the same thing.

During the finale of the thirteenth season of the US reality show, Jason Mesnick said goodbye to runner-up Molly Malaney before getting down on one knee and proposing to 25-year-old Melissa Rycroft.
"I am completely in love with you," he told the ecstatic former cheerleader during the emotional finale. "There's one more thing, Melissa, I love you, will you make me the happiest man? Will you marry me? I would love to marry you and spend the rest of my life with you. I love you, I love you, I love you will all my heart."

Only he didn't. He changed his mind.
Just like Garvey who at the time said he had "never been more sure of anything in my life" when he popped the question, six weeks later Jason dumped Melissa and admitted he'd made a big mistake.
But he did it on national television during the broadcast of The Bachelor: After the Final Rose, leaving her heartbroken and confused - and 17 million people in total shock.
"You took that from me, you took it," and angry Melissa said of the engagement. "I wish more than anything that last day that you had let me go."
It was eerily similar to Sam Frost's comments when she too was dumped by her ex-fiancee six weeks later.
"When he called it off, I said, 'How dare you propose to me? How dare you take that moment away from me?" she told The Project. "Because I want to be engaged once, and get married once, and I want to believe in it. And I feel like he kind of took that away from me.
While Sam was spared the humiliating break-up on-air, Jason then told a speechless Molly just minutes later that he wanted her back.

At least runner-up then front-runner Louise got a holiday to Thailand, some privacy and a paid mag deal.
Both men claimed they changed their mind because their relationship with the final girl was different after the cameras stopped rolling, both claimed they proposed because it felt right in the moment and both said they tried to rekindle their love with a runner-up because they wanted to live with "no regrets".
While Sam and Melissa garnered the sympathy of the nation, both Blake and Jason became the most vilified men in their respective countries.

"I don't know if anyone in pop culture history has turned American women against them like you did," Jason was told by an Good Morning America breakfast host months after the TV bombshell.
But he recovered, and so did the two women.
Five years on, Jason and Molly, described as "the most controversial couple in Bachelor history" are now married and have an 18-month-old daughter.
Perhaps Blake and Louise will live happily ever after?
