Aussie horses are no good

THEY call it the race of legends. More years than not, the best horse in Australia wins it.

Horses like Kingston Town (who won three in a row), Might and Power, Sunline, Makybe Diva and So You Think all won the Cox Plate. They were all Australian or New Zealand champions.

But now the overseas trainers have started to send the right horses. And today, the Irish horse Adelaide became the first northern raider to win our third richest race and premier middle distance event, the Cox Plate.

Adelaide triumphs in Melbourne: It's not a bad line. Not since the Port Power won the AFL Grand Final in 2004 has anyone been able to say that Adelaide won one of Melbourne's biggest sporting events.

Wisecracks aside, what a win. Adelaide took off early and ran three wide around the field. It was even wider on the home turn. You don't win a Cox Plate like that. Well, unless you're a freakish stayer from the northern hemisphere who has never missed a place in your seven previous starts.

It was a similar story in last week's Caulfield Cup. Japanese horse Admire Rakti went ridiculously wide yet still had both the speed and stamina to hold off our best.

We've known for a while that the quality of Australian stayers (distance horses) is on the wane, with our racing industry geared towards the quick bucks of the shorter races. It's a problem fuelled by all those over-hyped two-year-old races like the Goldden Slipper, with their too-generous prizemoney for babies.

This has all been on the cards for a while. Back when Makybe Diva won three Melbourne Cups, we thought maybe Aussie stayers were back. Turns out that was more of a blip than an indication of a trend.

Anyway, for now we can only sit back and Admire the likes of Admire Rakti and Adelaide. And say god help the Aussies in the Melbourne Cup.
