THREE people have died including an Australian pilot, and five people have survived a plane crash near Papua New Guinea's capital, an investigator says.

The Hevilift flight had eight people on board when it crashed into terrain about 7km south of the PNG Defence Force Supply and Ordinance Barracks at Goldie, near Port Moresby.

It has been reported that the pilot was Australian but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

However, PNG Accident Investigation Commission's William Seneka said the pilot, female first officer and a passenger suffered fatal injuries.

Earlier reports stated four people had died including both pilots and two passengers.

He said the bodies had been airlifted from the crash scene to Port Moresby.

Five people survived, he added.

"Our crews are onsite and they are going though the wreck and undertaking the site investigation at this stage," he told AAP.

Mr Seneka said the first officer was a woman who had been with the airline for a year while the pilot, believed to be an expatriate, was very experienced.

Mr Seneka said the cause of the fatal crash was still unknown but at this stage there are not any issues with the aircraft or the crew.

"The weather is a bit of a factor here," he said.

"There was low cloud in the area."

The twin otter aircraft was travelling from Woitape to Port Moresby.

PNG-based missionary Brother Matt Allen took to Twitter calling for people to: "Pray for my friends."
