FROM strange fears to obscure pets and unexpected talents, there is no shortage of weirdness in American football.

Ahead of Friday's season opener between Green Bay and Seattle, here are 11 ridiculous facts about NFL stars and coaches.

1. MARSHAWN LYNCH DEADLIFTS SKITTLES

The Seattle Seahawks running back has taken his love of lollies to a new level, pumping skittles instead of iron to prepare for the NFL season, as you can see in the video above.

2. ERIC BERRY IS TERRIFIED OF HORSES

Equinophobia is no laughing matter.

Just ask Kansas City Chief Eric Berry, whose fear of horses is of particular concern considering his team's mascot has four legs and neighs.

In an entertaining video, which you can see below, Berry lost his bundle after a woman rode the team's mascot Warpaint onto the field at a home game.

"Oh hell no, they got that horse," Berry said after first noticing Warpaint ride in, before making a beeline for the bench.

Berry's fear is so great that he loses focus on the game and coach's instructions while the animal was in sight.

3. DEZ BRYANT HAS THREE BABYSITTERS — BUT NOT FOR HIS KIDS

The 25-year-old has gotten himself in so much trouble over the years (including an incident in which he shoved his own mother) that the Dallas Cowboys had to come up with a drastic solution.

So the team hired a rotating three-man security team to watch him at all times. He is also banned from alcohol and needs to be tucked into bed by his midnight curfew.

4. J.J. WATT HAS A ROBOT NAMED AFTER HIM

The Texans defensive end, who has just signed a fresh $100 million contract, is one of the real good guys of the NFL and a fan favourite.

One such fan is young Cristian Beasley, a cancer patient who uses a VGo telepresence system to attend school remotely.

He calls it "Watt the Robot" in honour of his hero.

5. LARON LANDRY OWNS A MONKEY

How's this for an insight into the life of an NFL player.

The Indianapolis Colts' LaRon Landry bought a monkey after seeing one on TV.

"It was my third year in the league. I was sitting there watching Ace Ventura and I was like, 'Man, I'm going to get a monkey,'" Landry explained on NFL Films.

"About a week later, I had a monkey."

6. JOHN DENNEY IS A BEAST WITH THE VIOLIN

The two-time Pro Bowler from the Miami Dolphins has a love/hate relationship with the violin.

He is an accomplished violinist, having been "forced" to practice since the age of five.

"It was kind of forced upon me. My mum it was like, 'If you want to play a sport you've got to play a musical instrument.'

"But after all those years of hating it, you're grateful for it in the end to be an adult and have that talent."

7. STEVE SMITH ALWAYS 'FORGETS' HIS SHOES

After every game, the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver leaves his boots on the field to raise awareness about homeless people without shoes.

8. MIKE TOMLIN IS A GEOGRAPHY FREAK

The Pittsburgh Steelers coach was on the World Geography Olympiad team in high school.

He says he's "dangerous" and he "kills 'em" whenever the subject comes up on Jeopardy.

9. JASON GARRETT HAS A LOT OF SIBLINGS

A former NFL quarterback and current coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Garrett comes from a family of eight kids.

But that's not the fun part.

Each sibling is one year apart and all their names start with "J".

Jane, Jill, John, Janine, Jim, Judd, Jennifer and Jason.

10. KURT WARNER IS A GENEROUS MAN

Whenever the former Arizona Cardinals quarterback goes out to dinner with his family, they have a little tradition.

They anonymously pay for the meal of another dining party.

11. CHANNING CROWDER NEVER USED THE TOILET AT GAME TIME

No longer an NFL player, but still worthy of a mention is the former Miami Dolphins linebacker who peed down his leg in every game.

"I never went to the toilet. Six years straight I peed down my leg. My teammates didn't enjoy it as much as I did," Crowder said.
