This is the land that road rage forgot

Driving in Japan is a pleasure and road rage almost doesn't exist according to an Aussie expat. Courtesy TheJapanChannelDcom YouTube.

WE live in a cutthroat world. Everyone's trying to get ahead, get ahead, get ahead. If they can't do it nicely, they'll stomp on your face to get there.

Nowhere is this more obvious than our roads. Motorists in major Australian cities would sooner let you steal their wallet than let you merge ahead of them on a busy highway. Especially in Sydney. Sheesh, anyone would think there was somewhere actually worth getting to quickly.

But there's a place in the world where it's not like this. A place where decorum, restraint and politeness rule the roads. Ironically, it's the same place with some of the unruliest, pushiest train commuters on the planet, but that's another story.

The place is Japan. Yes, Japan. An Aussie who lives over there has just produced a quick video which shows how remarkably polite the Japanese are on the roads. Not only do they habitually let other drivers in, but they have a clever little way of thanking you when you've shown them a bit of courtesy.

What they do is, they flick their hazard lights. A couple of flashes of orange to say "arigato gozaimasu". And everyone is happy.

Here's what our rather awestruck Aussie has to say about Japanese drivers in his video:

"In 99 per cent of Japan, the drivers are so considerate and so polite. If you hear a car horn it's usually because they're just letting you in, so you'll hear 'beep beep' and someone's bowing to you and waving you in. They're just really polite, driving in Japan is usually pretty cruisy.

"One thing they do that's really nice… Japanese style is to say thank you all the time for anything that people do. So they have a way of doing that when they're driving the car. If you let someone in or you do something for another driver, they give the hazard lights a burst just to say thank you.

The only reason these Japanese cars aren't moving is that they're all trying to let each other in. Source: ThinkStock

"So yeah, it's really cool driving Japan. Finding your way around is difficult, that's another story… but as far as other drivers, it's an absolute pleasure. No road rage in Japan that I've ever heard of."

So there you have it. The Japanese are nicer than us. Now if only they'd stop hunting whales in the name of so-called science.
