THE MTV Awards are the much younger, much more entertaining sibling of the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

Shying away from glamour, emotional speeches and formality, the MTV Movie awards and Video Music Awards are about entertaining music and movie fans with explosions, musical performances and Robert Pattinson.

Solo hosts have included Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lisa Kudrow and Lindsay Lohan.

Collectively, the awards have brought us some hilarious and shocking moments since their inception in 1992.

So before the MTV VMAs kick off on Monday morning, here are some of our favourite moments frpm across the years:

When the reigning agent provocateur of pop picked out a frock for the 2010 awards she skipped the usual designer dress route and created pop culture history with her all-beef get-up. Her meat dress took the red carpet in a whole new direction, not to mention her matching meat shoes.

Britney bombs

Britney Spears left everyone aghast after her disastrous appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007, of which she later said: "I looked like a fat pig". After a brief marriage, a couple of babies, a divorce, rehab and that incident with a pair of electric hair clippers, Britney's shambolic attempt to reclaim her pop crown at the VMAs with a live performance of Gimme More proved to be another low point for the performer. It would be two years before the troubled diva managed to get her career back on track.

Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift

In one of the most infamous MTV VMA moments of all time, the ever-controversial Kanye (who was repeatedly photographed with a bottle of Hennessey cognac during the night) stormed onto the stage in 2009 just as Swift was getting into full-blown teary acceptance mode and swiftly earned himself a place in celebrity infamy.

There's awards ceremony shock value and then there's Miley Cyrus. The 20-year-old singer and her foam finger took raunchy performances to a new cringe-worthy level at the 2013 Awards, shocking fans with an explicit display of tongue-wagging, twerking and grinding. The episode spelled the end of her engagement to Liam Hemsworth and led to the demise of Robin Thicke's marriage to Paula Patton. He's still trying to get her back. Miley, her dignity.

Bruno gives Eminem some cheek

Out to promote his film Bruno, a G-string clad, angel-winged Sacha Baron Cohen, flew through the air in 2009, hovering above Eminem and literally making him the "butt" of his joke. A furious Eminem stormed out of the award show, but later admitted it was a setup.

Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen make out

After winning the 2007 MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss in Talladega Nights, Sacha Baron Cohen shocked the audience when he slapped Will Ferrell in the face while on stage. After accusing him of cheating, the pair made out, embracing passionately and rolling around on the floor.

Lindsay Lohan gets her crunk on

In 2004, a 17-year-old Lindsay Lohan, the youngest ever host of the MTV Movie Awards, wowed the crowd by breaking into a hip-hop routine with Omarian, to the shock of her fake onstage parents.

Jim Carrey parties like it's 1999

Jim Carrey's acceptance speech for his 1999 Best Male Performance nod was bizarre even by MTV Awards standards. A cigarette smoking Carey was described as looking like "some kind of hippie-Jim Morrison hybrid" declaring he's like to thank his "new biker friends" and thank the ladies for "dressing up so pretty."
