A TEENAGE boy been arrested in connection with the murder and sexual assault of a 6-year-old girl whose battered body was found near the trailer park they both lived in.

Media reports in the United States said the 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody this weekend without incident by the FBI.

There had been a manhunt across Washington state for the killer of Jenise Wright who had been missing since August 2.

The little girl was last seen when she went to bed that night but — in a move that aroused suspicion — her parents waited a full day to report her missing.

The parents said Jenise had wandered around the Steele Creek Mobile Home Park before and returned, so wanted to see if she came back before they called for help.

Investigators had been taking DNA swabs from residents of the trailer park to match against forensic evidence they had.

According to news agency Associated Press, the Washington state crime lab made positive confirmation of the suspect through forensic evidence.

Kitsap County sheriff's Detective Earl Smith said the boy was being interviewed and would be charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and rape.

Mr Smith described Jenise as an outgoing child.

"She was a happy child, a bright light for those around her."

The FBI's Specialty Search Dogs Unit discovered Jenise's body on Thursday amid thick brush in a wooded area near the trailer park. Dog search teams had previously reported that their dogs had showed interest in that particular area.

The area was very muddy and after the body was found police said whoever was responsible likely would have been covered in mud.

Officials have said that there were no signs of forced entry at Jenise's home and no indication she was taken from her room.

That, combined with the fact her father, James Wright, was once charged with sexually abusing two girls, initially made many in the community suspicious.

However, it emerged that those charges were dropped and that Mr Wright had eventually plead guilty to a lesser charge involving an older girl.

After his daughter's disappearance police told media they were aware of Mr Wright's past but said that both parents had been co-operative.

Hundreds of people, including officers from 15 law enforcement agencies, searched for Jenise, went door to door at the mobile home park on the west side of Puget Sound, across from Seattle. They also pulled surveillance video from nearby businesses and checked in with sex offenders in the county.
