The newest Samsung smartphone has made the move away from plastic and onto a metal cover, in a move no-doubt intended to increase it's competit

SAMSUNG has just whipped the silk cover off its Galaxy Alpha, a new line of premium smartphones intended to match Apple and finally silence those who ever called the Android phones cheap.

With every single Galaxy launch we're wowed by what the handset can do but there is something that has always just held it back from conquering the mighty iPhone: the lack of a premium feel.

For a price similar to that of Apple's aluminium and glass model, we've kind of felt a bit stiffed by the plastic bodied Galaxy.

'Style. Slim. Metal.' But is it any good?

Finally, it seems as if the big wigs at Samsung have heard the calls from the masses and have unveiled the metal-clad Alpha with its edges covered in the quality hard stuff we've been coveting on the iPhone.

"The Alpha has built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer markets," said Samsung mobile division chief, J.K Shin.

But is it enough to win over the doubters, really put it on the premium podium and, more importantly, sway customers away from buying the imminent iPhone 6?

We doubt it. With only the edges of the 4.7-inch handset being given the metallic finish it's still a far cry from the iPhone 5S or HTC One, which are wrapped in sumptuous aluminium. Some have likened the edges to an iPhone and the chamfered feature does have a hint of similarity but it still bears all the looks of a Samsung phone.

Anyone calling it an iPhone 6 copycat clearly isn't looking at the same phone. On the rear, there's that same dimpled polycarbonate found on the Galaxy S5.

Apart from this flashing of shiny metal there's very little for consumers to opt for this over the Galaxy 5S. It's not waterproof, the display has a lower resolution, the 12-megapixel rear camera isn't as good as the S5's 15-megapixel snapper, there's no microSD slot and its 1830mAh battery isn't as powerful either.

That said, the Alpha is an absolute waif at only 6.7mm thin, it's also lighter, more pocketable and packs plenty of processing punch thanks to octo-core brain power under the hood.

The addition of metal to a Galaxy is a welcome touch and a step in the right direction but it all seems a bit of a waste. A metal flaunting, luxury version of the S5 would have been a far wiser move. Sadly, despite the excitement the Alpha is not top dog here and others continue to lead the pack.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha will be available in early September in five different colours, with prices yet to be confirmed by carriers.
