A US beauty queen has started a social media movement after walking out onto a catwalk in her bikini with her diabetic pump on display during the 2014 Miss Idaho swimwear competition.
Sierra Sandison, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago, has been inundated with messages of support from diabetics worldwide after she posted the photo to her Facebook page.
Dubbed, #showmeyourpump, Sandison started the campaign to raise awareness of the daily battles of living with diabetes and called for diabetics around the world to post photos of themselves on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with their insulin pumps exposed.

"I would never have dreamt of posting a swimsuit picture on social media, but diabetics from all over the country have been asking to see me and my insulin pump on the #MissIdaho2014 stage. Honestly, it is terrifying walking out on stage in a swimsuit, let alone attached to a medical device," she wrote on her Facebook page.
"Diabetes turned my life upside down when I was first diagnosed. Don't let your challenge hold you back or slow you down. Use it to, not only empower yourself and grow as an individual, but to serve and influence other people as well," she wrote.
Facebook user Amber Vieira wrote: "You are amazing! I just showed this photo to my 8yr old type 1 son and it made him very happy to see he is not alone! We may be from California but we are rooting for Idaho!"
Another Facebook user, Debbie Alexander Clarke, posted: "You changed my 11 year old daughter's summer! She's been so self-conscious but since she read about you & saw this photo, she cannot wait to wear a bathing suit tomorrow & show off her insulin pod & have me post a photo here! Thank you so much!"

Diabetes is the world's fastest growing chronic disease. In 2013 there were 382 million people living with diabetes and 79,000 children that developed Type 1. This number is expected to rise.
