Swedish furniture giant Ikea has digitally removed women from it's Saudi Arabia catalogue has landed them in hot water.

A POPULAR website showing people how to repurpose their IKEA purchases has agreed to stop selling ads after the furniture giant threatened legal action.

Established in 2006, IKEAhackers.net offers tutorials on how to alter IKEA products to individualise them, sometimes in a novel way.

Popular entries include bedside lights made by fastening office lamps onto shelves above a bed and a minibar made from a collection of desk parts.

But IKEA recently issued the site with a cease-and-desist letter and requested it transfer the domain name to them.

Site operator "Jules" posted a statement earlier this week saying they were "crushed" by the company's decision to issue the letter.

"I don't have deep enough pockets to fight a mammoth company in court," they wrote.

They said IKEA had eventually ceded the IKEAhackers domain name, but only on a non-commercial basis.

This means all ads — and thereby income — will have to be taken down by June 23.

Jules stressed there was never any intention of exploiting the IKEA brand.

"I was a just crazy fan," they wrote. "In retrospect, a naive one too."

IKEAhacker fans were urged to sign up for a mailing list, so they can be informed about the new domain if it gets off the ground.

The site has denied it is a secret offshoot of the Swedish furniture giant.

Rather, it maintains the site is a place for IKEA fans to share their ingenious ideas to embellish and customise the company's products.
