How a bet led to a six-figure business

IT WAS a wisecrack comment that led Destin Sparks to start his six-figure business.

He was working in sales in a Brisbane camera store with no real love for the job while his budding photographer colleagues would spend their weekends shooting and their weekdays comparing snaps.

"They would go out shooting every weekend and I was always left out," he said. When a co-worker came back with a photo that got a lot of attention on Facebook, Mr Sparks made a "wisecrack" that he could do something better and headed out to try his hand.

"It didn't got so well the first time. It wasn't quite clicking. I month later it clicked and everything made sense," he said.

He's since turned his hobby into a full-time job running his photography business Destin Sparks, which turns over six-figures a year and sees him travel to remote and beautiful locations like the Whitsundays, Tasmania, Western Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Sparks sells his photographs online to clients from all over the world and runs workshops for amateur photographers on everything from night shoots to how to use an SLR. He abides by the rule of not working with children or animals and shoots mostly landscapes.

"I tried portraits and things like that but I didn't like it at all. You can take a perfect photo. But people still don't like the way they look."

His photos are unusual in that he shoots using film on a camera that was last manufactured in 1992. He also doesn't use photoshop or filters and prefers the "authentic" feel.

However an old-school approach can come with technical challenges and he said it can be difficult to get the right parts when it comes to repairs.

"Keeping my scanner in running order is the biggest obstacle I have. I've found just one person in the United States who still services these machines and at 250kg, I can't just pop it in the post."

Mr Sparks said although running his own business can be tough and lonely at times, he loves the flexibility of being able to do his own thing and plan everything the way he wants.

Being out among nature is one of his favourite parts of the job and he particularly loves visiting Queensland's Lamington National Park where there are more than 500 waterfalls or New Zealand's mountainous landscapes and autumn colours.

"I tend to make a lot of big decisions on my own. I've found the best way is learning from mistakes and things like that," he said, adding that he wouldn't have a business were it not for the support of family and friends who pushed him along the way.

"I was always doubting myself … friends and family pushed me. I have other people to thank for that' he said.
