WE CAN'T all be football nerds.

Many fans will start watching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil without knowing who Lionel Messi is. Others won't understand the rules. Some won't even know the words to their own national anthems.

MAKE YOUR WORLD CUP PREDICTIONS

We know this because Google is tracking the questions that people in all 32 competing nations have been asking ahead of their opening matches.

Using Google trends, we've picked out the 15 silliest questions that keep popping up.

1. COSTA RICA: Are the player injuries in the World Cup due to witchcraft?

Costa Ricans have been led astray by a witch doctor known as "The Devil of Wednesday", who claimed he would injure Cristiano Ronaldo to rule him out of the World Cup.

2. UNITED STATES: What does FC mean in soccer?

It stands for "Football Club", in case you're wondering. Maybe the answer would be more obvious to Americans if it were SC, for "Soccer Club".

3. BRAZIL: What are the words for the Brazil national anthem?

Apparently, many Brazilians realised they didn't know the words to their own anthem hours before their opening game.

4: NIGERIA: What does minister T.B. Joshua say about World Cup 2014?

Temitope Balogun Joshua is a Christian minister and televangelist. Perhaps God has given him some inside knowledge.

5. CÔTE D'IVOIRE: Who is Drogba's mum?

Didier Drogba is captain of the Cote D'Ivoire squad. During the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012, his mother Clotilde watched the games while cooking for hungry fans. What a saint.

6: SPAIN: What does a red card mean?

Seriously? Spain won the last World Cup. Its citizens should know stuff like this. Any player who is shown a red card is sent off — he has to leave the field for the rest of the match.

7. JAPAN: What is Zambia's world ranking?

This question seems random, but there's actually a decent explanation behind it. Japan played Zambia in a friendly last week. For the record, Zambia is the world's 76th-best team.

8. ARGENTINA: Where can I find the FIFA sticker album?

Yes, the World Cup sticker album is a real thing. An Italian firm, Panini, creates it every four years and something that resembles sticker-trading havoc ensues.

9. MEXICO: Who is Chicharito?

He's only your star player, Mexico. The man's actual name is Javier Hernandez, but he has always played with his nickname, Chicharito, on the back of his shirt.

10. GERMANY: What is offside?

I expected better of you, Germany.

11. ECUADOR: What did Sergio Ramos say after hitting Puyol?

The incident in question happened all the way back in 2010, during a match between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Sergio Ramos shoved Carlos Puyol in the face. Ramos didn't speak much after the game, but Puyol was rather sporting, saying the push was "already forgotten".

12. PORTUGAL: Which players appeared in Shakria's video clip?

Shakira produced a song called "La la la" for the World Cup, and it featured a line-up of football's biggest stars: Neymar, Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, Radamel Falcao, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Aguero, James Rodriquez and Eric Abidal. Talk about a talented roster.

13. ENGLAND: How old is Cesc Fabregas?

Fabregas, one of Spain's many star midfielders, is in the news because he's probably about to sign with English Premier League club Chelsea. But fans are particularly interested in Fabregas' age because he's dating a much older woman. Fabregas is 27, while his girlfriend, Daniella Semaan, is 39. Shock, horror.

14. HONDURAS: Who is Messi?

He's only the world's best player. Or second best ... it depends on who you ask. Anyway, don't be too surprised when Honduras, clearly a football mad nation, crashes out early in the tournament.

15. IRAN: Where can I find the Cristiano Ronaldo fan club?

In hell.
