A WOMAN has miraculously survived after being found trapped in her car four days after going missing.

Kristin Hopkins, 43, was found in the wreckage of her car by a group of hikers 43m below the scenic road she was travelling on in Colorado, US.

The mother-of-four was discovered off the Red Hill Pass, near Fairplay in Colorado, USA, on Sunday, May 4 after being reported as a missing person by Douglas County Sheriff's Office on April 29.

Ms Hopkins was airlifted to hospital where she is being treated for severe dehydration and is in a critical condition, the sheriff's office said.

Both her feet will have to be amputated after doctors said they were not able to save them due to the severity of the injuries.

Emergency crews who rescued Ms Hopkins said she had written notes on an umbrella to try and get help from passers-by, but wasn't successful.

Firefight Jim Cravener told CNN: "(The notes) were hard to make it out. One of them appeared to say 'Please help doors won't open'. Another one (said) 'Please help, bleeding, need a doctor' and another one said, 'Six days, no food, no water, please help'."

Ms Hopkins was finally rescued when a man stopped to photograph the scenic area. He thought he had found a body.

"She said she crashed at night," Cravener told CNN. "We assumed she crashed the night before, but it turned out it had been several days."
