IT WAS 10 years ago that Friends went off the air.

Since then, the six main cast members have had varying levels of success.

So who's on top today? Here's the rundown:

No. 1: Jennifer Aniston:

Post Friends: Since Friends bowed out, the now-45-year-old blonde has appeared in a long string of movies. Last year's We're the Millers was a big winner, changing her luck after a run of mostly duds, including The Bounty Hunter, Wanderlust and Love Happens.

Estimated net worth: $150 million

Love life: Aniston has been linked to Vince Vaughn, singer John Mayer, British model Paul Sculfor, Orlando Bloom and Gerard Butler.

She's currently engaged to Justin Theroux, an actor-screenwriter.

Scandals: There was that small matter of Angelina Jolie supposedly stealing Aniston's husband, Brad Pitt, on the set of 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Analysis: Make all the jokes you want about The Bounty Hunter or her endless "Sad Jen" tabloid covers. Aniston is clearly on top.

"She's broken out as both an actor and a celebrity," says Mickey O'Connor, editor-in-chief at tvguide.com. "All the stuff that makes someone a star, she has: She sells magazines, she has endorsement deals [with Aveeno and Smartwater], she's produced movies. I think you'd call her an A-list actor. You wouldn't say that about the others."

Aniston's Q score, a research-based measure of audience connection with a celebrity, was highest of the six when Friends ended and is highest now at 22, says Henry Schafer, executive VP of the Q Scores Company (16 to 17 is an average score). A whopping 82 per cent of Americans know who she is.

"She's done the best job of maintaining the momentum the cast had," Schafer says.

Her stumbling block in the future will be landing diverse roles. She showed promising dramatic chops in 2002's The Good Girl, but then followed that up with a string of frothy rom-coms.

"Aniston is easy on the eyes but I'm not sure how versatile she is," says Neil Landau, author of The TV Showrunner's Roadmap and a UCLA screenwriting professor. "I don't want her playing Madea."

No. 2: Lisa Kudrow:

(L) Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe on "Friends." (C) Kudrow with husband Michael Stern. (R) Kudrow as Congresswoman Josie Marcus on "Scandal." Source: New York Post

Post Friends: Kudrow has two cable television series. The Comeback, a 2005 HBO comedy that she co-created and stars in, is about a sitcom actor. It returns for six more episodes (in the US) on May 19. Showtime's Web Therapy is an improv comedy series about an online therapist. It was co-created by Kudrow, 50. She also plays a college dean in the Seth Rogen frat comedy Bad Neighbours, out this Thursday in Australia).

Estimated net worth: $60 million

Love life: Kudrow has been married to Michel Stern, a French ad exec, since 1995.

Scandals: The closest she's come is appearing on the TV show Scandal as a congresswoman.

Analysis: Although she's seemingly kept a lower profile than her former co-stars, experts predict she may enjoy more longevity.

"She's more of a character actress, and I think she'll have the longest career of them all," Landau says.

"People are more willing to see her as someone other than Phoebe," O'Connor says. "She's gone out of her way to take on these really different movie roles. I think there's a sense that she could do a lot of different things. She's a talented actor, period."

Audiences still seem to like her. Her current Q score is in the 10 to 13 range, similar to that of LeBlanc, Perry and Cox.

No. 3: Courteney Cox:

(L) Courteney Cox as Monica on "Friends." (C) Cox with boyfriend Johnny McDaid. (R) Cox as Jules Kiki Cobb on "Cougar Town." Source: New York Post

Post Friends: Cox, 49, has headlined two TV series: 2007's Dirt, about a gossip-tabloid editor, and Cougar Town, the regrettably named comedy now on TBS.

Estimated net worth: $75 million

Love life: Last year, Cox finalised her divorce from actor David Arquette, whom she married in 1999. She's currently dating Johnny McDaid, a member of the rock band Snow Patrol.

Scandals: In 2011, while she was still technically married to David Arquette, Cox caused an uproar when she was spotted on a St. Barts vacation with Cougar Town co-star Josh Hopkins.

Analysis: Cox has diversified perhaps more than her former co-stars. She runs a production company, Coquette Productions, that's responsible for Cougar Town and her upcoming directorial debut Just Before I Go. She's also the face of Pantene shampoo. She even has a real estate license.

As she draws closer to 50, however, her earning power might be limited the most by her acting career. She's failed to branch out into movies beyond Scream.

"I like her a lot, but she pretty much always plays herself or the same kind of character [as Monica]," Landau says. "Neurotic girls-next-door."

Cougar Town, which moved from network TV to TBS last year, recently wrapped up a fifth season, surprising many viewers, as well as the producers, who joked on the premiere episode's title card, "Season 5? Didn't see that coming."

"The show is a success, but it's a qualified success," says O'Connor. TBS has yet to announce if the series will return.

No. 4: Matt LeBlanc:

(L) Matt LeBlanc as Joey on "Friends." (C) LeBlanc and wife Andrea Anders. (R) LeBlanc as himself on "Episodes." Source: New York Post

Post Friends: The actor, 46, suffered through one of the biggest bombs in recent TV history — 2004 Friends spin-off Joey — only to catch critics and viewers off guard by returning in one of the funnier, sharper shows on the air, Showtime's Hollywood satire Episodes.

Estimated net worth: $60 million

Love life: LeBlanc split with wife Melissa McKnight, a former model, in 2006 after three years of marriage. The actor quickly moved on to Andrea Anders, who appeared on Joey. LeBlanc and Anders are still together.

Scandals: LeBlanc was all over the tabloids in 2005 and 2006 as his marriage to McKnight dissolved. In the National Enquirer, he admitted to a wild night out at a Vancouver strip club while on a motorcycle trip with some male friends. "The stripper was all over me," LeBlanc said.

Analysis: After the failure of Joey, LeBlanc has come back strong with Episodes.

"I think that's been a great, great career move for him," Landau says. "I'm always sceptical when someone plays himself, but the writing is so good on that show." Playing an exaggerated version of yourself has paid dividends for other actors, O'Connor says, including Neil Patrick Harris in the Harold and Kumar series and Bob Saget on Entourage.

"This is a good play for Matt," O'Connor says. "Unfortunately it's on Showtime. It has a smaller audience than a network show would."

Even so, Episodes has thrust LeBlanc back into the spotlight and won him a best actor Golden Globe in 2012 to boot.

No. 5: Matthew Perry:

(L) Matthew Perry as Chandler on "Friends." (C) Perry as Ryan King on "Go On." (R) Perry as Mike O'Donnell in "17 Again." Source: New York Post

Post Friends: Perry's resumé is unfortunately littered with failed TV shows, including Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Mr. Sunshine and Go On.

The 44-year-old has been mostly absent from movie screens, with the exception of the 2009 body switching comedy 17 Again. He may return to TV this fall in CBS's remake of The Odd Couple.

Estimated net worth: $70 million

Love life: He started dating Master of Sex star Lizzy Caplan in 2006. The couple parted ways in 2012, reportedly because Perry didn't want to get married.

Scandals: In 2011, the actor, who has struggled with alcohol and pill addiction throughout much of his career, announced he was returning to rehab. "Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web," his statement joked.

Analysis: Perry has been especially stung by multiple failed shows. "It puts him in a position where he's jinxed," Landau says.

"It's what I call the Christian Slater Syndrome, where nothing works."

The way forward for Perry may be to take supporting roles. "He's an excellent character actor. I'm not sure he's a star," O'Connor says. "When they bill a show as starring Matthew Perry, I'm not sure that works.

When he just shows up and does his thing, people enjoy it. He was great on The West Wing and The Good Wife."

Landau notes that Perry has had the most troubled personal life of the Friends cast, and that may have led to viewer backlash.

We'll see what happens with his pilot of The Odd Couple, which will air on CBS, a network that's stronger than Perry's former home of NBC and tends to put more marketing money behind its show launches. Perry might just have his first post-Friends hit.

No. 6: David Schwimmer:

(L) David Schwimmer as Ross on "Friends." (C) Schwimmer and wife Zoe Buckman. (R) Schwimmer's character Ross with on-again off-again love interest Rachel on "Friends." Source: New York Post

Post Friends: He works with the Chicago theatre company he co-founded, Lookingglass, and in 2006 he made his Broadway debut in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Schwimmer, 47, has also moved into directing, helming the 2007 Simon Pegg comedy Run Fatboy Run, as well as various TV episodes.

Estimated net worth: $80 million

Love life: Schwimmer married British photographer Zoë Buckman in 2010.

Scandals: The actor royally ticked off his East Village neighbours in 2011 when he demolished an East Sixth Street townhouse just before it was to be landmarked. In 2013, someone spray-painted "Ross is not cool" on the plywood fence surrounding the construction.

Analysis: Schwimmer was always the least popular of the cast. At the height of his fame, his Q score was 24 (compared to LeBlanc and Perry at 29). Today, he doesn't have a Q score because nobody has asked the company to compile one, Schafer says.

"When the show ended, I would have predicted he would have been the most successful, but he's stumbled the most," Landau says. "It seemed like he could potentially segue into leading-man roles in movies. He's like John Krasinski from The Office."

"He's got a chunk of change," O'Connor says. "He could become a windsurfing instructor if he wanted to."

Instead, Schwimmer may well return to TV this fall in Irreversible — a remake of a hit Israeli comedy.

Where is he now? Marcel the Monkey:

In Season one's The One With the Monkey, Ross adopts a capuchin.

Marcel was actually played by two monkeys, both female — one named Katie, the other called Monkey.

Both performers are now in their early to mid-20s and live in California at Bob Dunn's Animal Services, an exotic animal rental agency.

"They're doing fine," Dunn says. "They're still working."

Katie appeared in an episode of 30 Rock, and both have appeared at private events, such as a recent party in Beverly Hills.

Look for one to show up in an upcoming commercial for Kayak.com.
