SHE'S the stunning war correspondent whose brutal sexual assault at the hands of an angry mob in Cairo's Tahrir Square shocked the world.

Lara Logan was one of the brightest stars of America's CBS network — the fearless reporter who filed stories from some of the most dangerous parts of the globe after her spectacular rise to the top spot of chief foreign correspondent on the US version of 60 Minutes.

But, according to an explosive new expose by New York magazine, Logan is a risk-taking adrenalin junkie who has reportedly alienated her colleagues and got her security firm in Iraq fired after her Australian ex-boyfriend walked in on her with another man.

The future of the CBS journalist is now under a cloud after her fall from grace, which came after a discredited report from Benghazi — a fabrication that has led to her being sidelined for six months.

In the controversial 60 Minutes report, Logan interviewed Dylan Davies, a security consultant who claimed to have witnessed the Benghazi US consulate attacks in 2012.

But Davies turned out to be a discredited security consultant whose version of events was deemed dubious.

The scathing New York article — which is headlined Benghazi and the Bombshell: Is Lara Logan too toxic for 60 Minutes? — described how some CBS producers considered Logan "difficult" and many colleagues found her "almost insatiable stomach for risk" hard to deal with.

Logan's ascent to the pinnacle of broadcast journalism started in London, where she cut her teeth on the morning show GMTV.

The ambitious and glamorous South African convinced her employer to send her to Kabul, Afghanistan, following the September 11 attacks.

She was eventually poached by CBS and ended up negotiating a $1 million contract.

"She's got t--- and balls," is how the late 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Bradley summed up Logan's appeal, according to New York.

But the star reporter's brazen attitude reportedly rubbed some people up the wrong way.

The article also reports that Logan had CBS's security team fired after they let her ex-lover, Brisbane-born journalist Michael Ware, into her apartment while she was with another man — her now husband Joe Burkett.

Burkett, the magazine said, was a government contractor in Baghdad whose company did public relations for the military.

Ware, who had been seeing Logan for some time, sprung the couple together after Logan's security team of former British soldiers let him up to her quarters in the CBS compound.

Sources also told the magazine that one of her security guards was shot during a trip to Pakistan to see an al-Qaeda training camp and cameramen in the London bureau "revolted" against her.

"They thought she was dangerous and she was going to get somebody killed," a CBS executive told New York.

In February 2011 Logan made global headlines after she was sexually assaulted by a frenzied mob while covering the fall of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Logan later told 60 Minutes she was groped after joining the crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

"Suddenly, before I even know what's happening, I feel hands grabbing my breasts, grabbing my crotch, grabbing me from behind," she said.

"I think my shirt, my sweater was torn off completely," she said.

Logan said she thought she would die as the crowd beat her with sticks and "raped" her with their hands.

Logan said it was only the thought of her two children at home in Washington that helped her focus on staying alive.

For now, it is unclear what the future will hold for Logan. As the months go by, New York magazine says, the date of her return to CBS remains uncertain.
