COLLINGWOOD defender Nick Maxwell says he has no regrets about getting physical on the field with teammate Alex Fasolo during Saturday evening's win over West Coast.

The former Pies skipper was seen yelling and Fasolo, or 'Fas' as he's known at the Westpac Centre, during the second term after not carrying out instructions to Maxwell's liking.

Fasolo, once a smooth half forward, is a newcomer to the Collingwood defence this season.

Speaking to 3AW on Sunday, Maxwell said his younger teammate was making good progress in his transition to hard-nosed defender but sometimes needed a hand.

GUTSY PIES NOTCH FAMOUS WIN

"Look, in the heat of the moment you do what you've got to do to get the job done," Maxwell said.

"Fas is still obviously learning a new position and I really believe that he's going to be good down at half back with his kicking power but he's got to win his one on ones first," Maxwell said.

"His starting points are really good, and then he's just drifting off and probably (not) concentrating, so a couple of times I told him what I wanted from him and he just hadn't quite done what I'd asked of him.

Collingwood have won a classic match against the West Coast Eagles 109-101 at the MCG.

"So I had to get across there and make sure I told him in no uncertain terms that he had to make sure he changed it and got it right

"Obviously at half-time the first person I went to was Fas and he goes 'Mate, no problems at all. That's exactly right (and) want you to keep being hard on me' ...

"In the heat of the moment you've got to do what you've got to do to make sure that you're getting the job done and Fas has been really important for us."

BRAVE PIES NEED FINE TUNING

Maxwell's direct approach drew criticism from some quarters but praise from others.

The veteran was a standout in the Pies' win, guiding his side's undermanned backline in the absence of some key pillars.

"A lot of people, they comment on it as much as they like to, but when you're down back, a bad possession or a bad decision — and that's not even with the ball, that's if you don't go with your opponent or whatever it is — can result in a shot on goal.

"If the forwards make a mistake, the opposition still have to run the ball to the other end to score to really make you hurt."
