THE mother of a set of conjoined twins born in India last week is yet to meet her babies, who have been transferred to one of the country's top hospitals for expert examination.
Urmila Sharma, 28, gave birth to the conjoined twins last Wednesday. She couldn't afford an ultrasound and therefore had no idea she was carrying the twins.
The newborns have two heads, two necks, two spines and two separate esophagi and trachea, but they have only one heart and stomach and one lung each, making it very difficult to separate them.

"It is a gift that they have come this far. We can only pray that there is a future for them," Dr Malik said.
"We are trying all we can to help them and we're speaking to experts from all over the world to see if there's any chance of surgery. But it is looking unlikely at the moment."
The 3-day-old babies are currently being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital (AIIMS), in Delhi.
The father, Subhash Sharma, 32, who works in a bicycle factory says his priority is the health of his wife.
"When my wife started to feel pain in her stomach we rushed to see a doctor. When we came to know about them there were no words, there was no way out, we were very shocked. It was all in God's hands," he said.

The mother, Urmila, has only seen a photo of her newborn babies and has yet to meet them in person. The couple already have a 3-year-old daughter.
Keeping the babies alive was a "real tough challenge", said Dr. Ashish Sehgal, the CEO of the Cygnus J.K. Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, but he is hoping for success "with crossed fingers".
A complex and challenging surgery could save the babies' lives, but doctors cannot operate until the twins are stable.
The twins were born weighing seven pounds, seven ounces and have not been named. They have two necks and two spines.
Ms Sharma's family is reportedly "very distressed", reports British newspapers.

Some conjoined twins can be separated, depending on which organs are shared and where the two babies are conjoined, but most are stillborn or die shortly after birth.
