Five tips for the perfect dating profile

CREATING your online dating profile may sound like a pretty straightforward concept - post a photo of yourself and provide a short description of who you are.

In practice however, this task can become a whole lot trickier.

eHarmony's Annemarie Gallard — who has viewed thousands of Australian user profiles — says finding the right balance between emphasising your attributes while being honest and not coming across as boastful or self-centred can leave people second-guessing themselves.

"Putting your best self forward can feel daunting at first, but it really does pay off in the long run," she advises. "Many of our successful couples talk about honesty as being one of their partner's great qualities."

With that in mind, here are some key tips from eHarmony to make your profile the best possible representation of you:

1. Pick a GREAT profile photo
First impressions count — not just in real life but online too.

In the same way that a stranger may catch your eye from across the room at a party, someone's profile picture is the first thing you notice about them. What you may not realise is this tends to have less to do with the way someone looks, than with the photo itself.

Most importantly, make sure your profile picture is an accurate representation of who you are — don't use a photo from three or four years ago when you were younger/ thinner.

It will catch up with you when you meet that person and create instant doubts about your honesty.

2. Check your grammar

A common gripe when it comes to profiles is poor grammar. Ladies and gentlemen, always make sure to double-check your spelling. Paste your profile answers into a word document beforehand and make sure you've dotted every i and crossed every t.

3. Avoid being vague

A close second to bad grammar is not saying anything of note.

Some people manage to fill their whole profile without saying anything of interest. For example, rather than saying 'I like to enjoy life to the fullest', explain how you do this.

Maybe you have an interesting hobby, or you like to go travelling — the most important thing is to provide examples to give your profile some colour.

By saying 'I loved travelling around India last year', you stand a good chance of drawing in someone who has had a similar experience.

4. Don't over emphasise the small stuff

Another thing to watch out for are 'subjective incompatibilities' — things that would never be seen as 'deal-breakers' in a relationship, but can be off-putting in the initial stages.

For example, you may be a dog lover but if you spend your entire 'About Me' profile talking about your four-legged friend, a potential match who has no strong feelings about dogs may be put off at the initial stage.

It's simply a question of being moderate when making a first impression.

5. Highlight the positives

The overall tone of your profile is very important.

Negativity puts people off, so try to avoid saying what you hate (ie 'politicians really drive me mad'), or describing the matches you won't communicate with (ie 'I can't stand people who like Star Wars').

Save that for the 'Must Haves and Can't Stands' section, separate from your 'About Me' profile. Talk about what you enjoy and what you're looking for in a potential partner.

If you find it hard to talk about yourself, you're in good company. The key is taking the time to write your profile, re-reading and revising if necessary. If you don't feel too selfconscious, get a friend to read it and ask them whether they think it's an accurate representation of you.

Now, go forth and find love!
