IT SEEMS that some people in Britain are so desperate for some extra cash that they're turning to Facebook to sell their kidneys.

A British newspaper reporter first discovered a Facebook page for buying and selling organs and proceeded to pretend to be the brother of a woman who desperately needed a transplant. Within a week he had 11 offers.

One offer came from a 22-year-old who wanted £20,000 ($AUD37,000) for his kidney to pay for him to move back to his homeland of Hungary with his pregnant fiancee.

Another came from a desperate father of three who wanted £30,000 ($AUD55,000) for his kidney and immediately began to make arrangements for the deal to take place in person.

Aside from those British locals, other offers came from around the world, including Tanzania and Mexico. After organising the deal, most donors travel abroad to undergo black market operations — often to a southern Asian country — and are typically paid £20,000 ($AUD37,000).

Selling your organs is illegal in both Britain and Australia, with a penalty of up to three years in prison in the UK or up to six months in prison in Australia. On top of those penalties, sellers also risk death or health problems by entering surgery in the dodgy world of black market surgery, an industry controlled throughout the world by criminal gangs.
