A policeman was shot multiple times and died as a result of his injuries during an incident at MIT.

A statement issued by the Middlesex District Attorney Michael Pelgro said:

"An MIT campus police officer responding to a report of a disturbance in the area of Vasser and Main streets was reportedly shot. According to authorities, the officer was found evidencing multiple gunshot wounds.

"He was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased."

At 10:48pm gunshots were reported near campus Building 32 (Stata).

Police are swarming the cordoned-off area and the situation at MIT is said to be active and dangerous.

No other victims have been identified and no arrests have been made, police say.

The university says in it's latest update: "Responding agencies continue to investigate the situation. The scene is outside of Building 32 (Stata) and 76 (Koch) near Vassar and Main Streets. Injuries have been reported. The situation is still very active and we ask everyone to stay inside."

MIT, located in the Boston suburb of Cambridge, is one of America's most highly regarded universities. It is within walking distance to the site where two bombs killed three people and injured 180 at the city's famous marathon on Monday.

No link has been established between the two events.
