Rafter has final say on Tomic recall

Bernard Tomic might be enjoying a revival but there's no end in sight to his Davis Cup exile, after a fresh fallout with Australia captain Pat Rafter.

TENNIS Australia's administration will leave it up to Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter to decide the best way to handle Bernard Tomic despite no signs of improvement in the pair's frosty relationship.

Rafter last month banned Tomic from next month's Davis Cup tie in Taiwan because of attitude problems.

The 20-year-old then retaliated by refusing to make himself available for Australia's subsequent tie in April, but could return for a World Group playoff in September.

Rafter has been employed by TA to handle Davis Cup matters, leaving the two-time US Open champion to deal with Tomic how he sees fit.

"It's Pat's call. He's the Davis Cup captain, he handles the Davis Cup team and that's really up to him to handle,'' TA chief executive Steve Wood said today.

"Pat and the team work together. It's really for Pat to handle. That's the key behind how we run the team.

"Pat and Bernard will work that out and we're just looking forward to a great Australian Open and getting some wins on the board for Bernard and the rest of the Australians."

After stretching his unbeaten streak this year to five matches with another victory at the Apia International in Sydney yesteday, Tomic revealed he and Rafter were still not on speaking terms.

"I don't think we'll be in contact until September," Tomic said. "From there we'll see. That's all I can say."

Rafter has used strong-arm tactics to shake up Tomic's attitude and get him to fulfil his potential. The pair had stern words following the 2011 US Open but Rafter truly opened fire at Flushing Meadows in September when he labelled Tomic's second-round loss to Andy Roddick as "disgraceful".

Nevertheless, Tomic was selected for Davis Cup duty in Germany a fortnight later, only to be completely outclassed by Florian Mayer.

Tomic gained revenge over Mayer at Olympic Park yesterday with a breezy 7-6 6-2 victory but all the talk was about his Davis Cup future.

Lleyton Hewitt yesterday expressed his concern over the no-show.

"I'd like to have a chat with him obviously at some stage about it more because I know Pat, he's pretty frustrated," Hewitt said.

"He wants to have the best possible team we can have and Bernie's in that, there's no doubt about it, so that's a tough one.

"Obviously he had to work on a few things before he got back in the tie and whether that's had any influence on him missing the second tie, I don't know.

"It's disappointing he's not playing the first tie but that's for other reasons than Bernie missing it himself.

"There's still a bit of time left before the second one. We'll have to wait and see and that's Pat's call."

Rafter decided to drop Tomic last month, and Tennis Australia director Craig Tiley indicated attitude was a key reason.

"We just feel that this decision should provide additional motivation every time Bernard walks on the court," Tiley said.
