The sisters of Rye brawl victim David Cassai, have spoken of their heartache after the 22-year old's tragic death. They told Ten's Emma O'Sullivan, their brother was a popular young man, who would never harm anyone

UPDATE: DAVID Cassai was a "gem of a kid" whose life was taken away for no reason, his uncle said today.

David's uncle Sandro Cassai said his death was devastating.

"They have taken the life of such a great kid," he told radio station 3AW  today.

"David was just such a gem of a kid and his life has just been taken away for no reason."

Mr Cassai said he understood his nephew and his mates were ambushed.

He said they were not looking for trouble.

"David was just a gift to us all," Mr Cassai said. "He will be remembered forever. He was just such a great kid and he will be missed by many."

Mr Cassai called on the media and the government to work together to prevent similar incidents happening in the future.

"They just seem so minor, but they are just so devastating and so tragic," he said.

After the assault, David Cassai was flown in a critical condition to The Alfred hospital, where his family stayed by his side, but he died around 4pm on Monday.

Detective Inspector John Potter said CCTV footage captured the brawl, and clearly showed the group of five men as the aggressors.

He said police were confident they would be able to pinpoint those responsible for the violence, and urged them to turn themselves in before they were tracked down.

"Ultimately we're going to be able to identify you and it would be best if you came forward," Det Insp Potter said.

Yesterday, Sister Elisa paid tribute to her brother, calling the 22-year-old her knight

"I have lost a massive piece of my heart. I know you will shine down on us with your cheeky smile every single day," she posted in a Facebook tribute.

"I know how much you love us all and we love you too much and miss you more than words can explain."

Five men, aged in their 20s, launched at David and his mates with tragic consequences on Rye's main shopping strip at 1am yesterday.

In a brutal, unprovoked attack, David was punched to the face and fell to the brick footpath between two real estate offices.

One of his mates, aged 23, from Warranwood, suffered a broken jaw.

David's death plunged a huge circle of friends into mourning.

Some had spent the hours before the deadly attack partying with him at the Portsea Hotel.
