A MAN has been charged over the fight which led to the death of David Cassai on New Year's Eve.

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a 24-year-old man with intentionally causing injury and affray.

The Kilsyth man was bailed by police to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on February 20.

The investigation into the bashing death of Templestowe man Mr Cassai continues.

Earlier police arrested and interviewed four men over the  New Year's Eve incident.

An 18-year-old Millgrove man and 24-year-old Kilsyth man were arrested this morning, in addition to two others arrested and released last night.

The men are assisting police with their inquiries.

Mr Cassai, 22, died in hospital on New Year's Eve, hours after he was attacked by a gang of men on the Mornington Peninsula.

A Kilsyth man, 20, and a Yarra Junction man, 22, were released pending further inquiries.

The senseless death of Mr Cassai will save the lives of others through the donation of his organs.

The gift of his organs was a typical display of the Templestowe man's caring nature, his shattered uncle Sandro Cassai told the Herald Sun yesterday.

"His huge heart will keep beating. It will touch someone else's life and help someone," he said.

"We don't know how many lives he will save, but knowing David it will be a good handful."

Mr Cassai was killed in a brutal, unprovoked attack on Rye's shopping strip in the early hours of Monday.

Five men ambushed the landscape gardener and his mates, punching him in the face and knocking him out.

Mr Cassai fell to the brick footpath and hit his head.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital, but could not be revived.

The popular soccer player had been on a break at his family's Rye holiday home.

"He was a champion soccer player," his uncle said. "He had a huge network of friends.

"The waiting room at the hospital was full of mates."

Sandro Cassai said his nephew's death had devastated his close family and his many friends.

"He was just a great kid in the wrong spot at the wrong time," he said.

He said his hard-working and well-behaved nephew had never been in trouble.

"David liked a good time the civilised way - he enjoyed life without going around whacking people," he said.

Mr Cassai said he could not understand why the men attacked his nephew and his friends.

"They lack the values and respect David had," he said. "There is still a lot we would like to know, like what happened and why?"

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
